National Vanilla Ice Cream Day!

JENN McKINLAY: Today is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day! Hurray! Yes, this means you can have ice cream for dinner. You're welcome! And, by the way, if vanilla ice cream is your favorite, it means you’re impulsive!

Of course it’s 100% true because I read it in a Reader's Digest online story! I know we have some unusual flavors out there thanks to Julia's Fast Five a few days ago but maybe you'll find yourself on this list. The breakdown:

Vanilla = Impulsive
Strawberry = Introvert
Chocolate = Flirtatious
Mint Chocolate Chip = Argumentative
Rainbow Sherbert = Pessimistic
Rocky Road = Aggressive
Coffee = Dramatic
Chocolate Chip = Generous
Butter Pecan = Conscientious

Normally, I think these online lists are bogus, but this is where it gets a little crazy. In my house, we happen to have two strawberry ice cream lovers and both are introverts. There is also a mint chocolate chip lover, who from the time he could talk (at six months – very early with full sentences -- mostly, we believe, so he could yell at us) who is the poster child of a born debater. And, lastly, a coffee flavor lover who is just a little bit “extra” at times. Yes, that’s me, the (ahem) dramatic one.

So, what about you, Reds and Readers? What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream from this list and what does it say about you? If it’s not on the list, make something up. We’ll totally believe you!

  1. Dark Chocolate ice cream . . . yum.
    I’m not particularly flirtatious, though . . . I’m more of a Strawberry introvert.
    Nevertheless, I’m definitely having ice cream for dinner!

    1. Always a good plan. I wrote this during New England's miserable heat wave this weekend and my sis-in-law took all of our boys out for ice cream for dinner!

  2. From that list, Mint Chocolate Chip no question.

    And I am not argumentative. Am not! You just need to learn to agree with me.

    1. LOL - right? I used to love mint choc chip before coffee became my fave - so I'm a dramatic argumentative? Yikes!

  3. Coffee, every time dammit. And if I can’t have it , I don’t want anything. (Flounces off)

  4. Triple dark chocolate. Since it wasn't on the list, I attest that people who love it are passionate. We embrace it. We must have it. Nothing else will do.

  5. Chocolate. But I refuse to believe that I'm truly flirtacious. That sounds like entirely too much work.

  6. Coffee for me too... with chocolate sauce please. Though I don’t feel particularly “dramatic” - also I love sorbets - passion fruit!

    1. My thing this summer is mango sorbet, can't get enough of it. But I haven't tried passion fruit. Note to self

    2. Oh, I am also an Italian ices girl, myself. Watermelon.

  7. Strawberry = introvert? Who knew! Yet, my secret fave is one scoop of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate in a boat with a banana and all the fixings. So, I'm a flirtatious, impulsive introvert! Yeah, baby!

    1. Sounds perfect to me - with just enough fruit to be healthy.

  8. Any form of chocolate I can get. So I guess that makes me a somewhat complex person who also happens to be happily introverted. (Strawberries do appen to be my favorite fruit,)

    Vanilla does NOT even exist in my world.

  9. Coffee! I am totally coffee ice cream, and yes, sure, I’m totally dramatic. I buy this, 100%. It’s brilliant, clearly, with infinite psychological study behind it. I did have a brief dalliance with chocolate ice cream with pineapple sauce, but that was in high school. Scrolling up now to see what that means… Oh! Flirtatious.See? Perfect.

    1. It was the depth of the psychological study that lured me in...*snort*.

  10. Butter Pecan, always and forever! But conscientious? I don't think so. I'm more of a nut that loves another nut!

  11. Very interesting! There’s a lot of Mint Chocolate Chip among the men in my family, but I will stick to Ginger as attested in Julia’s Five!. So a little spicy perhaps, can be hot headed, loves food? But from your list Jenn, I’m with Edith, chocolate all the way, dark triple please though I’m happy to put a scoop of coffee, good coffee with it, and cover it with hot fudge. I’m actually more of an introvert.

    1. Celia, that sounds like just my scoop of ice cream! Triple chocolate, check. Coffee, check. Really good fudge sauce, check, check, check.

      Which I would call passionately creative.

    2. The sounds divine. I think there should always be hot fudge - my first food service job was as a waitress at Friendly's in high school - my god, I could eat their hot fudge by the bucket.

    3. Thanks Karen, we can be passionately creative together, and add Jenn with the hot fudge which should always be Friendlys. I’m interested Jenn, that you still love it. I always thought that working daily with ice cream might put me off it, but it may be too late to try that now.

  12. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. It's chocolate ice swirled with peanut butter.

    I also like Blue Moon. I'm told it's a Midwest thing. It's blue (of course) with a mild custard taste.

  14. Two good things about vanilla ice cream:

    It's the baseline. Unadorned vanilla is how you determine whether an ice cream line is any good.

    It's also the base for adding toppings, more than any other flavor.

    When we were first married, since we got hitched in Vegas, we decided to have our own "reception", at home, using the ice cream maker we were given as a gift. I made vanilla and chocolate, and made a variety of toppings. We asked guests to "bring your own", either a topping or something to drink with ice cream.

    We had fruit, syrups (my favorite is hickory), liqueurs, nuts, sprinkles, jimmies, marshmallows and marshmallow creme, sauces, and root beer. It was really fun. I might have to do this again, come to think of it. Maybe for our housewarming, before the end of summer.

    3. Wow Karen, I want to hang with you, married in Las Vegas - Congratulations. I love ice cream socials, perhaps I should give one here.

  15. Pralines and cream. Or dulce de leche. Love that caramel. Strawberry when I was an introverted child, aka shy. But I'll pick a yummy sorbet first. Lemon, mango, something sharp and tangy. Sharp matches my mood today. Snarky.

  16. I like vanilla, chocolate, and that special combo--chocolate chip. Which, I guess, makes me impulsive, flirtatious, and generous. That sounds like an excellent date-night combo to me.

    1. Most def, Gigi. I was wondering if there were any choc chip lovers out there!

  17. Coconut gelato. It means I'm a wanderer an adventure lover. As for ice cream...Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Vanilla. Impulsive traveler

  18. Coffee chocolate chip had been my go flavor to for a few years now. This year, though, it has been raspberry sorbet. Plain vanilla with fresh macerated strawberries is really nice in the summer. But vanilla with amaretto also lovely. So does that make me an pessimistically introverted person with impulsively dramatic and generous tendencies?

    1. LOL - you're complex, Deana! Definitely, complex.

  19. Vanilla ice cream on fresh strawberries, please.
    More introvert than impulsive but I never found a strawberry ice cream that didn't tasted chemical. I prefer strawberries " au naturel ".
    There's not a lot of butter pecan ice cream around here but I'm pretty conscientious too.

  20. Since my ice cream go-to is a single dip soft serve vanilla cone from the DQ down the street from my house, I guess that makes me impulsive with a layer of flirtatious. But what about the rum raisin, my serious ice cream choice? I'm going with deep and sophisticated...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rum raisin is a flavor I haven't thought of in forever. I must try it again -- soon!

  22. Now I'm really worried, because MOST of my family has mint chocolate chip as their favorite! To be expected, I suppose - two lawyers will produce a gaggle of argumentative kids.

  23. Coffee, oh coffee, wherefore art thou, coffee ice cream? I want you, I need you, I must have you. Why isn't there coffee ice cream on my table, now?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't feel particularly flirtations (chocolate) or argumentative (mint chocolate chip). Of course what I really love is salted caramel. Yum.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Peanut butter and dark chocolate - oh, my.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Okay, so I'm an oddball, and my favorites are not on that list. Pistachio. Pistachio almond. Spumoni (which has swirled pistachio, cherry, and chocolate). In Milwaukee, "ice cream" usually means frozen custard. And Kopp's Frozen Custard has a wonderful flavor two days a year (December 30 and 31), Chambord Alexander. Alas, custard doesn't keep.

    But what I dream of, and you can't get in the U.S., is gelato panna-- Italian cream flavored (NOT vanilla) gelato. I used to get one of their tiny scoops in a mug of macedonia (mixed fruit that had been marinating in its own juices) along with a cup of cappuccino for breakfast at a little place near the Uffizi loggia every morning when I was living in Florence.

  27. Blue Bell Natural Vanilla Bean is my all time favorite. It doesn't seem as sweet as the other vanilla, and is almost like iced milk with little flecks of vanilla bean. It is so good this time of year.

  28. Jenn,

    I love all of these ice cream flavors. What does that say about my personality? LOL

  29. I've yet to meet an ice cream I didn't like. When I go to DQ I get a chocolate vanilla twist. If they have hard pack ice cream I get at least two to three scoops and they're all different flavors. It adds the spice to life.

  30. Who made these categories up? Coffee ice cream is my favorite. But... dramatic? Moi?
