Confessions in the Time of Plague

RHYS BOWEN:

It’s confession time, people. I’m admitting my own failures. How many can you check off.

During the pandemic I have:

1.Stayed in pajamas all day

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.

3. Given myself a pedicure

4. Cut my own hair

5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one) And definitely no picture!

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one)

7. Started strange craft projects.

8. Cleaned out my closets.

9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.

10. Experimented with new meals.

WHO HAS ACHIEVED ALL TEN?

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN:
1.Stayed in pajamas all day
Ahh..I don’t have pajamas. But the key is: would I have happily answered the door in what I was wearing? Nope. I am trying harder now,  but still very low key. Is there anything lower than low key?

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.
Daily. I am still doing stories for Channel 7, so there’s some level of presentable--but a TV blazer and shorts and flip flops? Yeah, that’s happened.

3. Given myself a pedicure
Absolutely. Ask me about the cool manicure stuff I found on line. If you care. Revolutionary.

4. Cut my own hair
Just my bangs. Very very carefully. Terrifying, the first time. Now I have gone to the dark side.

5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one)
Daily. Yay, structured camisoles! Like high heels, I worry there’s no going back.

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one)
I don’t have pierced ears. But I have a basket of earrings on my desk for zoom emergencies.

7. Started strange craft projects.
Does cleaning out the freezer count? Well, I didn’t do that, either.  Planting tomatoes, does that count?  Very low on projects.  But I am cleaning cleaning cleaning.

8. Cleaned out my closets.
Like I said. Moved EVERYTHING. My closets are unrecognizable. I only wear black t-shirts on Zoom, because it’s the only thing that looks classic. SIgh. I miss my shoes. And leather jackets. I bought some wonderful new things for my book tour in August. HA. Not gonna happen.

9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.
You know-- initially, yes. Now--I have a new makeup routine. Simple, not glam, but  I'm thinking--self respect.

10. Experimented with new meals.
Oh yes. That’s a good thing.  There are moments of happiness, for which I am grateful.

HALLIE EPHRON:

1.Stayed in pajamas all day
Half the day? And nightshirt, not PJs. Gone without shoes for days on end.

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.
I have! But then I have to remember not to stand up while on the call.

3. Given myself a pedicure
Happy to discover I can find my toes.

4. Cut my own hair
Not yet… I’d wanted to try growing it out and guess I got my wish.

5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one)
Absolutely. And just ordered tank tops from THE GAP to wear under my Ts.

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one)
Earrings? Remind me what those are??

7. Started strange craft projects.
Does jigsaw puzzling count? Doing one from the 1950s right now, a water color of a ship. Otherwise I’m not a crafter. Oh wait, does making bread count?

8. Cleaned out my closets.
I rarely go in there, so no.

9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.
Or when we have friends come to share a drink outside.

10. Experimented with new meals.
Often guided by *what’s left in the refrigerator*

DEBORAH CROMBIE:

1.Stayed in pajamas all day

Nope. Not ever, unless I'm too ill to get out of bed. I have to take the dogs out first thing in the morning and am not doing that in my nightshirt, pandemic or not.

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.

Oh, yes!! Had to keep reminding myself not to get up!!

3. Given myself a pedicure

Nope. I decided that since I'm not going anywhere, my toenails needed a polish break. And I'm lousy at pedicures.

4. Cut my own hair

Only my bangs, very carefully. It has been kind of unexpected fun to let my hair grow out--it hasn't been this long since I was in my twenties. But it is getting to be a mop.

5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one)
Yep, unless you count bra-cammies. I have worn a real bra ONCE since March 12th, and that was only because I had a doctor's appointment.  And if anyone has a recommendation for bra-cammies, please share. I used to buy them at Express but they've changed the fabric and I don't like the new ones.

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one)

Earrings, seriously? I've worn them twice, on Zoom. Same ones. I'm afraid my ear piercings will close up…

7. Started strange craft projects.

I tested all my fountain pens and fountain pen inks. I even made a chart of the inks.

8. Cleaned out my closets.

Yep. We cleaned out our stair closet the first couple of weeks, because no housekeeper, we had to sort the cleaning supplies. But, clothes, no. I haven't even transferred my nice summer clothes into my bedroom closet from the off-season storage, because...why?

9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.

Make-up? What is that? Only a couple of times for Zoom. And no lipstick, which I used to put on even if just running to the convenience store. But now there's no point--and lipstick and masks do not mix!

10. Experimented with new meals.

Yes, a few, but nothing too crazy.

JENN McKINLAY

1.Stayed in pajamas all day

Not yet. Instead, I wear sundresses everyday. This is my version of the housecoats I remember my grandmother wearing. I get it now. For some reason (hot flashes) I can’t stand to have any clothing too close to  my skin. Tank top dresses with pockets for the win!

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.

No. I’m usually in a sundress and sneakers (broken toe, long story), so what you see is what you get.

3. Given myself a pedicure

I quit pedicures and manicures. I usually do them myself but who cares?

4. Cut my own hair

I went the other way and am letting my bangs grow out! This has never happened before. Now I think I need Botox but that’s not happening either. Hello, very large forehead with a very deep WTF line, which is getting deeper by the minute in the year of our Lord 2020.

5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one)

Sadly, no. Teenage boys roaming through the house. Don’t want to scar them.

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one)

I quit wearing earrings, too! I’m a rebel!

7. Started strange craft projects.

Think about them but don’t actually do them.

8. Cleaned out my closets.

Yes! And my kitchen cupboards. Goodwill made out!

9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.

Same and now I hate the feel of it on my skin. Mascara and lip gloss are okay, though.

10. Experimented with new meals.

I quit cooking! Hub has taken it over and I hate to break it to him, but there is NO going back!

LUCY BURDETTE:

During the pandemic I have:

1.Stayed in pajamas all day: Yoga pants and tshirts all day every day

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath. Yes.

3. Given myself a pedicure: not a big deal, but I don’t bother with polish

4. Cut my own hair: No, but I finally got a haircut on my hairdresser’s porch. I’m afraid the gray is her to stay...

5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one): Of course! Hate those things

6.Not changed my earrings once: Hmm, I think I put on a pair for a zoom meeting. Maybe again when the Reds zoom with Poisoned Pen next month!

7. Started strange craft projects. Does acquiring a puppy count??

8. Cleaned out my closets. Does a couple of bookshelves count?

9. Only put on make-up when I zoom. Ha!

10. Experimented with new meals. I am kind of over this and would like to get on Jenn’s hub’s list please...

JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING:

1.Stayed in pajamas all day: Nope! It just makes me feel icky. I’m dressing in my usual stay-at-home way, in clothing that’s comfortable, but that I wouldn’t be ashamed to run to the store in. Not that I’m running to the store without serious advance planning.

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath. : Oh, yes. That’s the best thing about this pandemic. I seriously wonder how many professional women, after working at home for 4, 6, 8 months, will EVER put in heels again.

3. Given myself a pedicure: Youngest did it for me!

4. Cut my own hair: I’m growing it out. It’s now long enough to put in a ponytail, which is great for hot days. Also, I have an infinite supply of headbands, which really help.

5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one): Best part of the day, baby!

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one) : I still mostly wear earrings and I do change them. However, I haven’t worn lipstick since I got sick at the beginning of February!

7. Started strange craft projects.: Saved seeds from green peppers and squash. Grew carrot fronds a la Hank in a dish. Realized at the end of June I was NEVER going to plant any of them.

8. Cleaned out my closets. Yes, and I’m working on getting rid of stuff in the attic we’ve been hanging on to for twenty-some years. Seriously, there are boxes of baby clothes upstairs. In my case, however, this is less about finding something to do and more about desperately needing space to fit one apartment and two dorm rooms’ worth of stuff into my formerly orderly home. Do you know what the closet situation is like in a 200 year old house? It ain’t pretty.

9. Only put on make-up when I zoom: Professionally. I don’t even bother for friends, family, church or community college meetings. However, I have been more attentive to my skin care.

10. Experimented with new meals: Totally! Having the Guest Son join our household has meant seeking out vegetarian or meat-optional recipes instead of falling back on my old reliables. It’s definitely upped my kitchen game.

RHYS: YOUR TURN! Time to share.

  1. 1. Stayed in comfy lounging clothes [which, if I wanted, could become pajamas].
    2. Did that Zoom meeting in my comfy lounging clothes.
    3. No pedicure.
    4. Cut my own bangs; I get John to trim the back when it gets too uneven. [But I did cut his hair . . . twice. Does that count?]
    5. Definitely gone without the bra.
    6. Didn’t even put on the earrings.
    7. No strange craft projects . . . I hemmed curtains for the sunroom. Now that my moon puzzle has finally arrived, I’m doing the jigsaw puzzle thing.
8 [Shudder] I don’t even want to think about cleaning out my closets.
    9. Does tinted chap stick count as make-up?
    10. Oh, lots of kitchen experimenting . . .

    1. Hemming curtains counts as a strange craft project in my book. It would take more than a pandemic to get me to do this one, Joan.

    2. Didn't have much of a choice, Gigi . . . they were a tad too long and had to be fixed.
It wasn't much of a job though . . . ten minutes tops.

  2. 1.Stayed in pajamas all day: I have my hanging out at home shorts, and I will wear those with a T-Shirt when I'm at home. It's not what I sleep in, but it is what I am wearing all the time. Even to work since I am working from home. I love it!

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath: Does a T Shirt count as a good top? It's what I'd wear for the Zoom meetings I've had - church and family. In the past where I've had Skype business meetings, I've put on dress shirt, tie, and slacks, but been barefoot.

    3. Given myself a pedicure: Never had a mani or pedi. Haven't started now.

    4. Cut my own hair: I've cut my own hair for years. Just get out the clippers and buzz it all one length. I was actually lazy for a few months. Went two and a half months without shaving or cutting my hair. It felt so good when I cut it again and went back to my usual goatee.

    5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one): Moving right along....

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one) : I haven't changed what's on my ears. Then again, I haven't worn earrings in my life, so I guess that doesn't really fit in with the question.

    7. Started strange craft projects.: Nope. In my condo, I'm not sure where I'd work on them since my dining room table (the place I would probably do them, has turned into my desk while I work from home.

    8. Cleaned out my closets.: That sounds suspiciously like something productive and work. Reading, internet surfing, and watching TV still pretty much dominate my life outside of work time.

    9. Only put on make-up when I zoom: Sorry, if you Zoom with me, you are getting me without make-up. Then again, I never wear make-up....

    10. Experimented with new meals: Does getting take out from new restaurants count? Because I've done that a few times. But still not cooking.

  3. 1. Nope, always wear comfy everyday clothes, even when I was terribly sick with COVID-19.
    2. Nope again, same full-on clothes for Zoom calls.
    3. Nope thrice, since I don't do it at all.
    4. Finally, a YES. But I have cut my own hair for 14 years so this wasn't a biggie.
    5. Nope again, see number 1.
    6. Nope, no earrings since my office wardrobe changed in the 1990s.
    7. Nope, not crafty at all.
    8. Kinda did one closet to find some items.
    9. Minimal makeup especially now that I am wearing masks.
    10. Yes over 50% of my cooking is new recipes. A lot of fun, and few failures.

  4. 1. No pajamas.
    2. Always.
    3. Am also giving the toenails a polish-free summer, but I did get down there and clip them.
    4. Yes, but it needs it again. I've also abandoned "product" and the hair dryer. WYSIWYG, as we said in the software industry (what you see is what you get).
    5. Alas, no. That would feel like abandoning all hope.
    6. Earrings every day, because I love them, and they do change.
    7. Does a new kitten count?
    8. No, but I should. I've sent in two books, though.
    9. Yes, only for zoom, and then only when I'm "on."
    10. Experimenting would mean more trips to the grocery store, which we have been carefully spacing out as long as we can. But now with summer produce - yay! First corn on the cob tonight.

    1. Re crafts: I did start making masks at the beginning, thinking I would be one of those donating a hundred to the local hospital. After I made five or six for the two of us, I realized my time would be better spent writing. So ten masks worth of pretty West African cloth and elastic lay cut and ready for...someone else. Also haven't put away the sewing machine!

      Delete
    2. I did the same. Made masks if any fabric lying around but then John ordered a box of 100 when they became more plentiful so mine languish

  5. 1. Yep - at the very beginning when I was working from home, but my jammies are cotton workout shorts and a tee shirt. No one knows :).
    2. Absolutely - we used to zoom for work and try to outdo each other in top/bottom contrasts.
    3. No pedicure.
    4. Never, like several on this list, I have decided to grow it out - for a while. I did once cut my own hair in 1979, It was a disaster - lesson learned.
    5. Daily - unless I am leaving the house for some reason.
    6. One of my pierced ears closed - I had it re-pierced pre-covid and it closed again. I'm taking it as a sign.
    7. Started crocheting again. I have one entire square half done. Someday time an ambition will coincide.
8 We just completed the trip from Florida to Maine - closets in Florida are cleaned of all winter items, still looking for most of the winter clothes to fill the Maine closets.
    9. What is this make-up thing of which you speak? I do opt for Tangee lipstick and blush and a sweep of mascara for professional zoom appearances - don't want to scare the viewers :)
    10. Love cooking and will try anything. Dealing with using up the Florida supplies and not going to grocery unless it is absolutely necessary has made for some interesting combos.

  6. 1. As I walk the dog, now dogs again, in the mornings, I always dress. Mostly tank tops and shorts and sandals.

    2. No Zoom meetings and I do nothing special for Facetime anyway

    3. I keep my toes respectable, trimmed, lotioned, but no polish this summer. Same with fingernails.

    4. Got a haircut when salons opened in May and I've trimmed my bangs since then, so I coud see

    5. The bras I wear barely qualify as such, soft cotton with front opening. So I haven't gone without. Don't want to frighten the horses.

    6. Earrings but mostly because I don't want the piercings to close. I wear the same pair day after day until I get bored and try something new. My favorites for summer are little gold ladybugs.

    7. Crafting is not in my genes, so no. But yesterday we adopted Sergeant Pepper, an 8 week old miniature poodle. This will keep me occupied the rest of the summer, as Lucy Roberta can testify to!

    8. Hallie inspired me to clean closets and drawers last winter, and I still look at mine with amazement. we've also cleaned out a few kitchen cabinets but lots more to go. And then there's the fridge.

    9. Makeup? What's that? Rarely a little eye shadow and mascara, touch of lipstick. Very rarely.

    10. Trying new recipes is a way of life for me, so nothing new there. I also have baked all our own bread, again because I like to do that. What I haven't done this summer is pies and cakes and cookies. This enforce isolation is fattening, and I don't need any temptation.

I do have a confession to make however. I've discovered Italian Ices, Luigi's Mango Ice. I could live on them. Yes, I know it's only water and sugar. But in this -- for us-- hot summer, it's all I want.

  7. 1.Stayed in pajamas all day: Nope! I'm outside a dozen times a day to check on the garden, get mail, etc. And we love to sit on our front porch.

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath. Well, yeah. But it's just with my kids, or with book club.

    3. Given myself a pedicure: I normally do my own, anyway. But I took all the polish off for a podiatrist appointment this week, and a polish break sounds great.

    4. Cut my own hair: I've always cut my own bangs, anyway. My hairdresser says she'd trust me to cut hers. (Three daughters, all whose hair I cut until they were adults.) I used to cut the back of my own hair when it was really long, and tried to do that a couple weeks ago. Steve evened it up for me with his trimmers. And I didn't do a bad job cutting his hair. Time to do that again.

    5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one): Never. Things haven't gotten THAT bad yet.

6.Not changed my earrings once. I've only worn earrings once since March. And I took off all my fancy rings so it would be easier to keep my hands sanitized.

    7. Started strange craft projects. I had big plans, but so far, have only planted things everywhere.

    8. Cleaned out my closets. Since the house is only a year old, only a little bit of reorganization was necessary.

    9. Only put on make-up when I zoom: Lipstick most days. For Steve.

    10. Experimented with new meals: Lots. Costco has my new favorite meat entree: salmon patties, individually frozen. They take six minutes to grill, three minutes on each side. Delicious.

  8. While I didn't give myself a full haircut, I snipped off the offending curls that came at the end of my hair as it grew out until I could get a real haircut from my barber. Luckily my hair seems to grow slower so it never got too bad.

The other nine things on this list are either things that don't apply to me or I didn't do.

  9. 1. Stayed in pajamas. No. Especially at the beginning, I feared that "this way madness lies."

2.Zoom with good top/casual bottom. Yes, mostly back in the winter. (Just because I like my summer clothes more and don't mind getting fully dressed in them.)

    3. Pedicure. Absolutely! Makes me feel better.

    4. Cut my own hair. Yes. It was -- OK. Nerve wracking. But I am very grateful to be able to go back to my stylist now.

    5. Gone without a bra. Nope, like someone else above, I wear very comfortable bras and don't think twice about it.

    6. Not changed earrings? No, just like with the pedicure, putting on earrings makes me feel better.

    7. Started strange craft projects. No. Just not a crafter. Not even in a time of COVID.

    8. Cleaned out my closets. Yes-ish. Only one, half-heartedly.

    9. Only put on make-up when I Zoom. Yes, and even then only mascara. And this is one where I've pledged to never go back. It feels liberating!

    10. Experimented with new meals. Definitely. Most successful, an occasional loser. For a while there it was my only creative outlet, and I made the most of it.

This "must do list" is on a sticky note on the bathroom mirror:
    1. Shower
    2. Brush teeth
    3. Wear earrings

Anything else that gets done is an optional extra helping through the day.

By the way, burned my bras in 1960s and never looked back!

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.
Lots of bare feet Zooms, but shorts work for my class and other Zooms, so no issue. Mostly, like Jenn, wearing sun dresses.

    3. Given myself a pedicure.
Don’t use polish, but yes to pedicure.

    4. Cut my own hair. Nope, growing it out. Surprised at how little gray for a little old lady!

    5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one) And definitely no picture!
Okay, maybe for a longer time each morning, but no. College days behind me. Not a “B” anymore.

6.Not changed my earrings once. (guilty until I lost one)
Yeah, that’s how I get dressed up for class on Wednesday nights.

    7. Started strange craft projects.
No. Baking lots, but that’s not new.

    8. Cleaned out my closets.
No, too sad a job. Already a bit sad.

    9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.
Right. And Estee Lauder wants me to buy lipstick. Really? And wear it when?

    10. Experimented with new meals.
Not too much. Making comfort food. Lucy/Roberta, you made me laugh out loud. Yeah, Jenn. I think I mentioned once before that mine doesn't cook.

I'm the only one there, so it's very zen-like. My major preoccupation is exercise for fall and winter. I hate to buy equipment, so I'll have to be diligent about zoom workouts.

And a more recent memory of being the only one diligently walking the indoor track at the local sports center mid-mornings. While no longer completely closed, it is not open for individual walkers. The heat and humidity are squashing the little motivation I had for walking outside. Like you: I hate to buy equipment! Keeping on moving.

    1. So sorry about your arm! I remember breaking my wrist and how John had to dress me!

    2. Yes, I used to get my structured camis at the gap, and then at Victoria’s Secret until they got too lacey. . There used to be a place called “soft surroundings” or something like that… Does that still exist?

      Delete
    3. You can order from Soft Surroundings online. Our malls are now open and we have one that is close to the main entrance. But I doubt I’ll go. We do get their catalogue

    4. If you want to go practical but downscale on those bra-cammies, try Duluth Trading Company. So sorry to hear about your arm.

    5. I second Duluth Trading's cammies. They are great, have adjustable straps that are comfy, and the shelf bra is actually supportive. I wear them to bed.

  15. 1- Not in pajamas but when at home I always wear old comfy clothes.
2- yes zoom with not so old top and don't get up.
3- I never polish my nails, feet and hands. Only cut nails when needed.
4- didn't cut my own hair but was able to have them cut very short when my hairdresser opened.
5- I never wear a bra at home, only when I'm going out
6- I never take my earrings off even when sleeping. They are gold little twisted circle that only come out for X-rays or repairs.
7- I'm not a crafter but I have planted herbs ans a tomato plant this year.
    8- only one closet cleaned.
9- I never put make-up. I have very sensitive skin and eyes. I can't even wear perfumes.
10- yes I successfully experimented with food.

  16. Our hairdresser came to our house! And cut Jonathan’s and my hair in our backyard. It was perfect! And what a treat. We even used the outdoor extension cord for the blow dryer.

    1. Oh, I'm jealous, Hank! I thought I would have my friend/stylist come cut mine on the front porch, until things got so bad here. Now, sigh. Maybe next month...

  17. No jammies--always wear comfy clothes. No Zoom meetings. No polishing, just clip regularly. My nephew gives me a trim when needed. Braless often at home. No earrings--ears won't stay pierced, finally gave up. Making my own hand soap is the only project I've undertaken that doesn't involve planting something. 1/4 of garage cleaned. No make-up. Nephew is doing quite a bit of cooking now--mostly winners!

Ann, congrats on getting Sgt. Pepper! I've been following Lucy/Roberta's photos/clips of Lottie and TBone. No, I am not allowed to get a puppy. No kittens, either. No no no....

  18. 1. Nope. I have to make outside appearances: bringing in the newspapers, walking the dog.
    2. Don't zoom. Ever.
    3. Don't do manis or pedis.
    4. I trimmed the front sides once. I got a professional haircut about 3 weeks ago. Since she's had health problems in the past she is super careful. Only one person at a time in her shop. And she cleans like a maniac!
    5. My bra-less states occur only in winter when I layer.
    6. Don't wear earrings.
    7. No strange crafts started.
    8. Still thinking about those closets. . .
    9. I've quit wearing makeup for now. What's the point if you don't go anywhere?
10.Experimenting with new meals? No more than usual.

  19. Well. I seem to have lived a Corona life style for years. No bra, always earrings, no makeup ever. No pedi, mani or whatever. Very good at cutting my own hair.

Don't hate me. I may have found My Time.

My sourdough was a disaster, but now I have a ukelele. Working on Hallelujah. (C, Am, C, Am, F...)

    1. Hooray for the ukulele! You go, girl. I dug out my mountain dulcimer.

    2. Thanks, Gigi. I just came back here to correct the spelling.... I realised I'd misspelled it! UKULELE!

I have a dulcimer tucked away too. In fact, when I thought about the uke (see how it happens?) I did say, hey, why not just get out the dulcimer?

    3. My late husband was deep into dulcimers. I had one that was mine, but I rarely played. Now I'm not only learning to play that one, for real this time, but I've also dug up the bass dulcimer Warren had. When I had to learn GarageBand for my job, I got a really cool USB mic, so now I'm thinking . . . you can see how this could quickly get out of hand!

  20. Ohhh! This is fun! I love reading all these answers.
    1. Stayed in pajamas all day: No. I don't wear pjs except when traveling, and well, not traveling, so... I usually wear dresses, which sounds WAY fancier than it is. I found some 'swing' cotton dresses at Loft Warehouse online at a super low price. They're like wearing a long t-shirt! Or I do an actual t-shirt & leggings or yoga/workout pants.
2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath. Oh, for sure. :-)
    3. Given myself a pedicure: Yes, and manicure! I love pedis/manis. Like Hank, I've found some incredibly great products online. NCLA vegan gel polish (as long lasting as gel but because it's vegan, very easy to remove with acetone polish remover) is DA BOMB! I also love Olive & June brand, which is regular nail polish--great for toe nails IMHO, because I don't use gel on my toe nails. Only thing--I bought a gel polish dryer (for manis), which is pricey... except I'm not going to the nail salon, so I've actually saved a bunch of money. Also, like Hallie, I'm happy to find my toes by myself, LOL. I find I really like my weekly nail time. I fire up a podcast and do nails... ahh.... I may never go back to a nail salon!
    4. Cut my own hair: I finally--after lots of video tutorials, advice from my friend Heather Webber--trimmed my bangs. It actually worked out well, so I'll probably keep doing that too. I've always wanted to learn how to put my hair up in a French twist, which (youtube tutorials again) I know how to do. I love it!
    5. Gone without a bra (unless you are male. You can skip this one): Well, yeah. I do that anyway. I've also discovered bandeau bras--ahhhhh. A wee bit of support without shoulder straps digging in. I note Hank referenced camis with bra support built in. What?!? That sounds genius. Must research!
    6. Not changed my earrings once. I can't stand to sleep in earrings, so if I wear them, I take them out at night. I usually do put them on in the a.m. They feel like a part of getting dressed for me.
    7. Started strange craft projects.: Does learning to do a French twist count?
    8. Cleaned out my closets. Working away, tiny bit by bit, on them and on basement. The kitchen is now super organized, and the laundry area. I'd have thought by now I'd have the whole house organized and cleaned out. Ah well. My husband's obsessed with organizing the garage, and I've helped with that.
    9. Only put on make-up when I zoom: I like to wear makeup, but I've scaled back and started playing with how to make mine more minimal/natural. I finally gave in and order Boom Sticks the other day. They haven't arrived yet. Anyone here use them? I think--dare I go without full foundation/color correcting cream?!?!? But the thought of not wearing foundation is so freeing... (kind of like less structured bras.) We'll see. The thought has made me more attentive to skin care. (Must drink more water!) Also, I like lipstick and sometimes just put it on before I write, so I feel like, I'm going to my JOB! Must be professional!
    10. Experimented with new meals: A bit. We're cooking a lot more, of course. We haven't been out to a restaurant since March! (We do takeout/delivery occasionally.)

  21. 1.Stayed in pajamas all day
No, but I live in tank tops and leggings all day.

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.
I have often thrown a nice top over the standard tank top for a 30-minute Zoom meeting.

    3. Given myself a pedicure.
I trim my toenails. Sometimes I put lotion on my feet. Not sure if either qualify as a pedicure.

    4. Cut my own hair.
    Oh, no.

    5. Gone without a bra:
I switched to bra cammies a few years back, although I still own a few bras. I don't even bother with the cammies these days. The tanks I wear are stretchy and supportive enough.

    6.Not changed my earrings once.
I don't wear earrings, although I love Hanks bowl of clip-ons for "emergencies."

    7. Started strange craft projects.
So, so very guilty of this one! I have a whole box of strange knitted pieced that I plan to assemble into an afghan whenever I figure out how that can be done. I've also dug out some of my unworked jigsaw puzzles and started plunking around on some of the musical instruments here at the house.

    8. Cleaned out my closets.
Nope. They are big, and they are not straining yet.

    9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.
Totally, and then it's only mascara.

    10. Experimented with new meals.
Lots. I'm currently in the process of redefining "chef salad." Raisins taste great in there! Do I have to include lettuce?

    ReplyDelete
  22. No to most of them. I'm bald and wear a "Captain Picard" haircut, so it's simple with clippers. Now that Goodwill is opening, there are some things in bags in the already cleaned out in January closet to go there. As for clothes, shorts and a T-shirt every day, shoes only when gardening and on my one outing since March, a visit to the eye doctor.

  23. Too fun!

    During the pandemic I have:

1.Stayed in pajamas all day -
Yes. But very cute pajamas. Or yoga pants and soft teeshirts. Since we live on the edge of the wilderness with no neighbors within seeing distance no one knows and honestly, would I care if they did? Prolly not.

2.Done a zoom meeting with a good top on but bare feet and shorts beneath.
    No Zoom.

    3. Given myself a pedicure.
I've painted my toenails, but I haven't tried to give myself a real pedicure so that my feet are soft and smooth. I am missing having my feet all soft and smooth. But not enough to go to a nail salon!

    4. Cut my own hair.
    Bangs only.

    5. Gone without a bra -
Definitely. No one hates a bra (or shoes) worse than me.

    6.Not changed my earrings once.
I seem to have forgotten about earrings until reading this. Now I'm going to get up and find at the very least, a pair of studs to keep my holes from closing up.

    7. Started strange craft projects.
I've been doing a little knitting and I pulled out an old needlework project that I'm loving. A very cool hand painted canvas that I "might" actually finish.

    8. Cleaned out my closets.
    And dresser drawers.
Several times. I have to keep replacing the yoga pants and teeShirts that have "shrunk" during the pandemic.

    9. Only put on make-up when I zoom.
    No Zooming.
I haven't been wearing make-up but I've really upped my skin care routine. I've discovered I love giving myself a facial.

    10. Experimented with new meals.
Yes. But mostly baking. LOTS of baking. Hence the yoga pants and teeShirts "shrinking"

    1. Kaye, what kind of washing machine do you have? I’m asking because my machine seems to be shrinking my clothes, too, and I’m pretty sure I just need a new washer.

  24. Great list!

From that list, I have only cut my hair. It was getting too long and in my face so I cut the back. Still long, though not as long as it was. I cut my own nails, which I always do. Baking and cooking more food. Cannot wear earrings anymore because of the magnets in my speech processors.

  25. 1. Stayed in pajamas all day.
    Yes, more than once.

    2. Done a Zoom meeting ...
I haven’t done Zoom, but I have done a few FaceTime calls with a decent top and pajama bottoms.

    3. Given myself a pedicure.
Nope, I’m not pedicure person, but I can see how painting your toenails might give you a lift.

    4. Cut my own hair.
No. I have been to the hairdresser once to get a cut and color.

    5. Gone without a bra.
    Almost every day.

    6. Not changed my earrings once.
The only time I’ve had earrings in was for my mother-in-law’s funeral in June. I maybe should be keeping some in, though, to keep the holes open.

    7. Started strange craft projects.
No, not really. I’ve thought of some, like doing a picture with buttons, but I haven’t followed through.

    8. Cleaned out my closets.
Not closets, but I have cleaned out my pantry and a blanket chest and some drawers.

    9. Only put on makeup when I Zoom.
The only time I’ve worn makeup was the time I wore earrings.

    10. Experimented with new meals.
I have done some of that, but, like Kaye, I’ve done lots of baking new things, even trying a blueberry cake.

  26. I've just realized a couple of interesting things I've done: put some new strings on my harp. This was a feat of agility as you have to thread through from the post. I have gone through every photograph that wasn't in a book. Thrown away four grocery bags full of them and organized all the others into books.

Reading and reviewing have replaced needlework as my "craft." I just did a bit of Beta reading, and it was fun! (Once a writing teacher, always . . . )
I read that shelters are putting most of their animals into foster homes now, and if it weren't for the allergies, I'd volunteer. I'm enjoying Edith and Lucy's sharing of the pets. <3
Earrings, bras, makeup? They might just go the way of the corset . . .
    Stay well, my friends. <3
