Keeping my fingers crossed for the Senate. A recalcitrant Senate will make everything so much harder. But this, wow! So relieved from the end to this uncertainty, went to bed at 8:30 last night.
Relief, joy, and satisfaction combined with a strong sense of wariness. What will that beast wreck on the way out? In the last few days he's tried to start a civil war.
That graphic makes me catch my breath every time I see it, it's just so profound.
The child depicted is from the famous Norman Rockwell painting of Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to desegregate an elementary school in Louisiana. She had to be escorted by US Marshalls to ensure her safety.
Ruby Bridges is now 66 years old, and an activist and philanthropist, living in New Orleans. She has had a very interesting life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_Bridges
I have a feeling she is inordinately pleased with this juxtaposition.
Tiny, determined, oh so brave Ruby Bridges has been my hero for a long time. Kamala, for at least a few years now. I love the picture and I'm so happy about the election results. I've been sleeping like crap for the past week, but last night I fell into bed early and slept deeply for 12 hours.
Can I be trivial? I LOVED her white pantsuit last night! My granddaughter watched. Her takeaway: "I love her tie." It was shiny. (We're hoping our granddaughter will be the first mermaid president.) Yes, yes, yes. SO thrilled.
According to the Washington Post, 91% of Black Women voted for the Harris Biden ticket. How many women marched, campaigned, supported with donations in the last 4 years? One hundred years ago my Grandmother voted in a Presidential election. Yesterday women helped "fire" the sad failed President.
Rosie the Riveter says "We can do it" Last night Kamala Harris told us "And then, you voted. And you delivered a clear message. You chose hope and unity, decency, science and, yes, truth."
The Women's Marches of the last four years galvanized women as nothing else has in decades. Including, thank goodness, young women, who stand to lose or gain the most going forward. It has heartened me to watch this process as much as it has to take part in it.
Yes, but white women voted for him in about the same numbers as 2016. This is but a pause in the continuing civil war in the US. Their plan is that 45 will run in 2024. If McConnell keeps his iron grip i on the senate he may achieve his goal of making Biden a one term President. He tried with Obama and it almost worked.
Folks, all these guys are old. McConnell, Trump, and Biden--Bernie, too. We can worry about what they'll do in the days and weeks ahead, but Don Jr. is more likely to be in running shape in 2024.
What a powerful speech and a warm personal speech. Clearly not saying the right things because they were expected but from the heart. And she has the best smile!
I was commenting here yesterday when the breaking news come through. It made me late leaving to make the flower arrangements at church. I didn't care, and I HATE being late.
That graphic brings tears to my eyes every time. I remember Ruby Bridges and those who followed her during those turbulent times. Like Judi, I am dancing in the streets in my mind.
Hallie, as a rabid scuba diver, I'm looking forward to voting for the first mermaid president :)
Isn't it strange? There's a whole different feeling. Things seem so possible now. ANd yes, Rhys, the realization that someone is speaking from the heart is so instantly different.
This graphic brings tears to my eyes. Wouldn't Ruby Bridges be proud?? And I am so proud of Kamala and Joe. I know they have a hard job ahead of them, but for the first time in a long time I feel hope.
I saw a collage picture of every VP in U.S. history and then HER beside it...yes, I wept. Take that, glass ceiling! We have a long way to go but this is an amazing first step.
My niece, who is a rabbi, posted one word with the collage of all the VP's plus Harris. It was 'shecheyanu' which is the Hebrew blessing recited to mark large and small milestones- first day of a holiday, first fruit of the season. It gives thanks for being preserved to reach this moment. So right!
The Ruby Bridges graphic is perfect - PERFECT - for today. I was just old enough to have some idea off the world beyond my immediate. I remember her and that period and the unforgettable Rockwell painting.
Yes, I feel like a weight is off of my shoulders. I hope Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be able to work with the Republicans to get things done. Our country was born out of compromises where everybody doesn't get all they want but everybody gets something. Now it seems people would rather get nothing than see their opponents get something. At least Biden can undo some of the executive orders that Trump made. Stay safe and well.
A news anchor last night said that the speeches and Joe and Kamala and just all of it was "an American moment," and what an American moment it was. I haven't felt excited and hopeful like this for, well, the last four years.

Hallie,
DeleteLove love love that she will be the first mermaid president.
Diana
I loved the pantsuit too, and her two little grand-nieces in their white dresses!
DeleteMermaid power!
DeleteBells rang across Europe to share our celebration. Touching and gratifying. So relieved, though it's far from over.
ReplyDeleteAnd did you see how Saturday night live got the pantsuit right? How on earth did they do that?
ReplyDeleteBUmmed that I fell asleep before I could watch SNL.
DeleteI fell asleep but my husband came and woke me up so I wouldn’t miss it

ReplyDeleteHoping that President Biden and Dr. Biden will get the chance to visit Buckingham Palace during the four years.
Thinking about the Duchess and Duke of Sussex living in California. I am sure they are thrilled too.

ReplyDeleteYes, there are priorities. ANd I'm sure the flowers were still perfect.
DeleteFor the first time in so long I woke up this morning without that pervasive sense of dread. Congratulations, America!
ReplyDeleteSO agree. And now..the great work begins.

ReplyDeleteYes, that was great. There was a twitter post that said: Step carefully, ladies. There's a lot of glass on the floor.

ReplyDeleteYes, the weight. Isn't interesting? SO much has changed, but how much has changed? Again: one step at a time.
