RHYS BOWEN: I’m a Libra and while I like being diplomatic and urbane, romantic and charming I do not fit the negatives. I have never been indecisive, in fact I could be said to make up my mind too rapidly. I am certainly not gullible or easily influenced and I’m not self indulgent ( I’m not saying I’ve never been a bit flirty).
I’m on the cusp of Virgo but that’s not me either! Actually I think I fit more with the Aries profile which was my mother’s sign, also both grandmothers!
HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: So funny, I’m a LIbra, too, which would mean that Rhys and I are just alike.. And well, we’re not. Are we? I might be diplomatic, but not urbane. Romantic? Depends what you mean. Charming? Meh. Easygoing and sociable? No and no. Idealistic and peaceable? Well, that’s closer. I know my moon is in Leo, creative and enthusiastic, that seems right. I’m pushing being a Scorpio: and the “determined intuitive emotional” that’s right, too. And now, you can see, with me weighing all the possibilities here, and not being able to decide, that I am a perfect Libra.
DEBS: Hank, we all think you are enormously charming!!
I once had an astrological reading done by Jessica Crispin, which was complex and astonishingly accurate, and gave good insight into why I went into psychology. She ended with giving me some things to read, which I need to track down now.
Meanwhile, here’s an interesting article about writing style according to your astrological sign: https://www.grammarly.com/blog/writing-style-astrological-sign/
It’s simply not true that all I need is a friendly pat on the back LOL!
HALLIE EPHRON: Looking at the definition of my sign, Pisces, the term WISHYWASHY comes to mind. Like those fish, swimming in two directions at once. I am not wishywashy. But I remember discovering once upon a time that Elizabeth Taylor is a Pisces, and she doesn’t seem particularly wishywashy either. Someone once told me that my “rising sign”(whatever that is) was Scorpio. Maybe that explains it.
JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: I’m a Cancer, and boy, am I a real Cancer. Homeloving? Yep. Nurturing? Yep. Ruled by the stomach? Oh, yeah. Moody, emotional and prone to clinginess? When I was younger. (I think we all even out with age.) Do I literally feel better and happier in and around water? Uh huh. Everyone’s therapist? Oh, if I could only charge by the hour.
Cancers are people who, when they invite you for “Netflix and chill,” mean, “Bring your cuddliest blanket and get ready for a four hour Lord of the Rings marathon.” Also? Look at this list and be stunned and amazed at the awesome writing power of people who just want to stay at home and have feelings: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/155639.Popsugar_2021_4_A_Book_by_an_Author_who_Shares_Your_Zodiac_Sign_Cancer
DEBORAH CROMBIE: I've always thought I fit the Gemini profile pretty well. I'm outgoing and chatty and interested in so many things. I hope I'm witty and eloquent and youthful! I am also, however, very easily distracted and that can tip towards scatterbrained.
My Moon is in Cancer, however, and that influence seems to be pretty strong. I'm very home and place oriented and I really, really like time on my own.
And Julia, if we're going to brag about famous authors who share our astrological signs, I can claim Arthur Conan Doyle AND Dorothy Sayers!
How about you, Readers? Do you match your sign?
Astrological signs are something I don’t know too much about. I could hope that I match all those lovely positive Leo comments, but I cannot see the negative Leo comments in myself. I’ve been told that Leos are supposed to be outgoing, happy to be popular, and always wanting to be the leader in charge of things. I am definitely not any of those, either. So . . . .???
ReplyDeleteHooligan 2 is a Leo and all of that. I hear that your rising sign factors in but I have no idea how to determine that so I am left with the overall description of my sing, too.
DeleteI'm a Pisces, but I don't really match what is listed for my sign. In contrast, I do follow the CHINESE ZODIAC and that sign does resonate more. I was born in the Year of the Horse, and more specifically, the year of the FIRE HORSE. The birth rate in Japan dropped dramatically that year since families feared giving birth to female babies. My grandparents & godparents in Japan were so worried about my fiery, independent nature that they tried to match me up with a suitable boyfriend/husband when my parents & I spent the summer there. Didn't work.
ReplyDeleteGrace, if I were a FIRE HORSE WOMAN I would totally get a tattoo saying the same.
Deletewhat a great idea Julia!
DeleteOh, that's awesome. Hooligan 1 was born in the year of the Golden Dragon so my friend Xiuzhen brought back a baby outfit with a golden dragon embroidered on the back from her trip home to Shanghai. I still have it, of course.
DeleteI love this topic. My college roommate was a serious astrologer and did my chart way back then. I'm a double Scorpio, which means that the sun also rose in Scorpio that day (I was born at dawn). I am totally a Scorpio - kind of extremist in all things. But my moon - which, for women, is their female energy - is in Taurus (which is opposite Scorpio, so the moon was full at my birth) and people often see me as a comfortable earthy type. Also true!
ReplyDeleteNow I live with another serious astrologer and I understand better how all the different parts of your chart affect who you are. Some of you Reds who don't feel your sun sign identifies you well might have other major parts of your chart (rising sign, moon, and the planets closest to the sun) in signs that do fit who you are. There are also various categories of signs - water, earth, fire, air - and also signs that are fixed, mutable, or, um, I can't remember the third. All those things interact to govern how you see and deal with the world.
Oh, and Margaret Atwood is also a Scorpio!
DeleteIt gets so much more complicated as you go along but I find it fascinating when it's spot on.
DeleteA long time ago I had my chart done - now I have to find it! I am a Cancer on the cusp of Leo. That said, I am somehow a double Leo but I don't remember the details - moon, rising sign? Don't recall. What a great chart!
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who does charts - I may have to email him!
DeleteI was raised in a very strong Episcopalian household (one reason I love Clare Fergusson!) and the last thing anyone was talking about was astrology. However I was also born with my heart on my sleeve, emotions that constantly swept over me and swept me away. My sister, who is ten years older, likes to tell the story of me at three, weeping bitterly over the plight of something small... a worm dried to death on the blacktop, a baby bird fallen from the nest, even in her sarcastic telling, a flower I'd been told would never bloom. She at 13 was taken aback by my passionate sorrow but our mother explained simply, "Sel feels things deeply." When I was an adolescent someone told me that this was connected to being a Gemini... having TWICE as much emotion as anyone else. I don't see this definition in other places, and I have become (at least outwardly) calm as I've aged, but it was a reassurance when I needed it. And that's all I've connected to astrology.
ReplyDeleteYou had a tender heart, Milkmaid, and I think that can happen under any sign! (In my very Episcopalian household, being overly emotional was Not The Done Thing.)
DeleteJulia, it wasn't The Done Thing in our household, either. (When my very reserved Southern father was dying of cancer, I helped him into bed on what would prove to be his last night. He was so thin and frail and as I took his slippers off his poor feet, I said, "I'm so very sorry, Dad." He answered with his invariable courtesy, "About what?") During childhood I was considered sort of a freak of nature by my four siblings. The acceptance came from our mother. She had five very different kids and as my older sister (still a devout Episcopalian) said when she died, Mom was the closest we'd ever come to knowing the love of God.
Deleteyour mom sounds so wise!
DeleteOh, I wish I had the patience and insight of your mom. What a gift.
DeleteSorry, but I must be the sign that dictates that any time anyone talks about astrology my very soul screams NONSENSE! GET A GRIP! In the same category: nyone remember those *leadership styles* that they tried to get us to sort ourselves into with amazing *insights* (are they still out there?) All in the name of trying to tame the glorious complicated chaos that is reality. Or maybe it's just me being grumpy (still getting over Covid) since it can't be my strong Episcopalian upbringing ;-)
ReplyDelete"Myers Briggs" - that's what I was recalling - and it's learning (not leadership) styles. Utter tosh.
DeleteOh, no, Hallie! I didn't realize you were still sick. Hope you recover quickly.
DeleteYes! Myers Briggs, biorhythms, and there was another personality test, too. I had to take all those as part of various sales class sessions when I sold insurance. Like everything else, you can definitely see some resemblance to your own personality, but none of them are "dead on".
I had to laugh. This is my reaction to astrology also. I think I put in about strong Episcopalian household because the idea that there was a God of infinite love and forgiveness was the belief system that permeated my childhood, which didn't leave much room for star signs!
DeleteI should add that as an adult I left the Episcopal church because the liturgy drove me crazy ("Do you have to listen so hard?" asked my mother). However I will always thrill to the poetry of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer of my childhood and I respect the directions the church has taken.
I hope you feel better.
Hope you are feeling your way towards being better. Hugs
DeleteThe anonymous person is me, Dru.
DeleteHope you get better soon, Hallie. Danielle
DeleteHallie, feel better quickly. I didn't know you have been ill.
DeleteHallie: hope you feel better soon. And a big fat YES to 'learning styles' being utter tosh.
DeleteAlso not a believer. But I LOVE the idea of it. The connection with the universe. Folks from eons ago recognized the power of sun and moon for agriculture and tides - literally exerting a pull. I think we all want to be part of something bigger, and to believe the universe 'gets me.' I know that love of mystery is one of the reasons I read, well, mysteries. I love stories with magic and myth, secrets and symbolism, insights and intrigue.
Delete(Loved your description, Hallie, of the circle of Ritz crackers resembling the ouroboros)
And agree Myers Briggs was utter tosh.
Hope you feel better.
Why didn’t I know about you getting COVID? So sorry.
DeleteAnd I agree completely with you about astrology. Utter crap. Except of course all the nice stuff about Sagittarius people — like me.
So sorry you've had COVID, Hallie. I hope it's over soon!
DeleteFeel better soon, Hallie! Also, didn't I read a million Jungle Red posts ago that you read your horoscope every day? Or was that a different Red?
DeleteThat 'getting over Covid' stuff--hope you're on the far end of it and feeling better every day!
DeleteThanks to the hippie movement, we all have a little exposure to astrology! My best friend, Barbara, was my source for all things zodiac for decades--she was a Dr. Scholls/VW Bug/hopsack dresses version of a hippie when I first met her. (Now she has a lifestyle that could not be more different.)
ReplyDeleteAs Edith said, rising signs and other aspects affect each sign. Otherwise, Rhys, Hank and I--Libras all--would be exactly the same. And clearly, we are not.
I also follow Chinese astrology a little, and feel that further defines my own character, at least. As an Iron Rabbit Libra married to an Earth Ox, I've learned a lot of nuances in our birth signs. If you want to learn a little more about that, this site explains it well, although I disagree with some of what they say, especially about colors. No orange or yellow for either of us! https://www.thespruce.com/chinese-zodiac-sign-and-feng-shui-element-chart-1274894
I love those names karen, Iron Rabbit Libra! Earth Ox! (is he a Capricorn too?)
DeleteOh, I have to check this out. Thank you, Karen!
DeleteRoberta, Steve is a Leo.
DeleteAnd he's a twin, very different to his (fraternal) brother, which shows how individuals can't be pinpointed.
Hmmm of COURSE I looked this up, and I am Earth Ox Libra married to Dragon Metal Capricorn, and you'd think that wouldn't work. Plus, I think I'd rather be the Dragon Metal Capricorn, which sounds much cooler.
DeletePisces here. Like adkmilkmaid, I was part of a very active Episcopal family (yay for Rev. Clare) and mom really had no time for astrology. I think some of the Pisces characteristics fit--although both my twin sis and I have a streak of stubbornness and doggedness that seem to be the antithesis of "easily led".
ReplyDeleteI think my mother must have been an outlier in Episcopal moms, because she was fine with me getting a battered copy of Linda Goodman's Sun Signs at a yard sale. I even had some sort of game that had to do with astrology, but the only thing I can remember about it are the totally groovy pictures. Of course, my mother had me quite young, and was in her twenties during the sixties, which may have made a difference.
DeleteI read the horoscopes in Seventeen, Teen, Cosmo, all the mags every month with my bestie as we tried to suss out our high school social lives. I still read Taurus after Aries in case I need to let her know something. LOL.
DeleteI'm a Gemini and fit the description well. Conan Doye and Sayers!
ReplyDeleteVery nice company to be in!
DeleteI'm a Pisces and I don't think the description is all me, although I am a big dreamer and I am not wishy-washy. I know what I want and if I need it, I get it.
ReplyDeleteYou much have a rogue rising sign, Dru. We need an astrology based mystery series and then have our charts made at conferences - LOL.
DeleteThere IS (or was) such a series! Connie di Marco's Zodiac Mysteries. Also, my Cozy Capers Book Group protag's mom (who changed her name from Edna to Astra...) is a professional astrologer, and I love pulling in her quirky observations.
DeleteAnd Rochelle Staab had a series around Tarot cards and other mystical practices.
DeleteI’m an Aquarius: friendly, humanitarian and loyal. Not very original and inventive but most certainly independent and intellectual.
ReplyDeleteNot intractable and contrary, no, no :). Contrary of unpredictable ( oups ! ) .
I don’t show my emotions but I feel them deeply. I may look detached but a psychologist once recommended me to build a shield to protect myself.
Danielle
I don’t remember what it is supposed to be but I like that my Chinese sign is the dragon, they are both cute and dangerous.
DeleteDanielle
So interesting that a psychologist told you that--sounds like you took it to heart.
DeleteThat is interesting. One of my closest friends is an Aquarius and feels things very deeply but doesn't show it - I thought it was because she was Swedish but maybe not...hmmm.
DeleteBased on that chart I am way more Cancer than I am Aries! Never knew before.
ReplyDeleteJudi, I've always been tempted to read all the horoscopes in the daily paper, and then choose my daily sign according to which one is going to have the best day!!
DeleteI like Judy's idea, Judi -- Ack, the Judies have aligned! LOL.
DeleteIf I own the good, must I also own the bad?
ReplyDeleteI have never had my chart done and without knowing all the nuances, I doubt that a true picture can emerge. So, maybe it is more than just a load of drek. But, why do I need to know how the stars and planets have determined my course through life? Perhaps having your chart done and seeing the total picture does help one to understand oneself, and if that works for you, then I am not scoffing. But, I had a really good shrink who changed the course of my life, and I am loathe to mess with what he taught me.
Nah, I think we can cherry pick our traits. I'd definitely bank on the shrink over the star chart.
DeleteJudy, I still have a chart a friend commissioned for me in the early 1990s, and it's actually remarkable how close it is. This is a multiple page report, maybe ten pages, and very detailed.
DeleteWow, Karen. How has that knowledge helped you throughout your life? Has it influenced your decisions or just your understanding of yourself?
DeleteI have never studied up on astrology at all, so some of the terms folks are throwing around here mean nothing to me. I should read up on it sometime, because it sounds like digging another level down begins to make it make more sense.
ReplyDeleteI am a Capricorn, born on the very first day of that sign. I've always wondered if I didn't fit the profile of a Sagittarius better. Maybe I just dawdled longer than I should have in the birth canal? I do have to say, though, that my husband is a Sagittarius and the description given above really matches him, at least the positives part. And honestly, the Capricorn description largely fits me, though I have never been accused of being fatalistic, miserly or grudging. Nor pessimistic, except by my WILDLY optimistic Sagittarius husband.
Hooligan 1 is a Sagittarius and, boy, do I love how he is always the glass is half full, even when it's empty. LOL.
DeleteVirgo here. I check all the boxes - positive and negative. I do worry. I can be harsh and I'm definitely a perfectionist. But I'm (mostly), analytical, shy, practical, diligent, reliable, and (although not mentioned above) loyal to a fault. Paired with my Aries husband, well, let's just say it makes for some interesting arguments.
ReplyDeleteFellow Aries here and, yeah, we can be dogged in our need to have the last word.
DeleteI've had to learn when to let go. Sometimes, it's just not worth the hassle. LOL
DeleteI can see myself in the Gemini description with a couple of exceptions. I hope I'm not superficial and, if I had a bit more cunning in me, I might have survived life in corporate America a bit better. But the rest, good and bad, are pretty much on target.
ReplyDeleteI think that's how it stacks up for most of us. Little bit of this and a little bit of that.
DeleteI'm an Aquarius, but I don't think the full good or the full bad fit me very well. Nonetheless, this topic interests me...
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting. I think we all just really want a clue about ourselves and our journey because, mercy, it's complicated!
DeleteSO agree.
DeleteOooh, an existentialist exercise early on a Monday morning. Just my kind of fun. I'm a Leo and according to those who know more than me, this is not a surprise. According to this description though I would be both open-minded and expansive and dogmatic and intolerant at the same time. Though at different times and in different situations, I suppose both could apply. I would add "complex and sometimes contradictory" to the list! I wouldn't say that I was faithful and loving but I am loyal and trustworthy. Pompous? Would a truly pompous person actually be able to recognize it in oneself? I would say that I'm a great deal more humble than I was as a young person.
ReplyDeleteHooligan 2 is a Leo and, man, did they ever nail it on the bossy bit. LOL. Of course, I'm not saying that to him. He is also very warm hearted so there is balance :)
DeleteI had my chart done years ago by a friend who was very into astrology, and unfortunately I don't remember most of it. I don't put too much stock in it, but I find it interesting that humans love to find ways to categorize and analyze themselves.
ReplyDeleteOh, I know most of my characters signs, too, which is a fun way to think about them.
DeleteNow THAT is fun to know. What is Kincaid's sign?
DeleteJudy, he's a Libra:-)
DeleteYes, and when I'm stuck on a character's traits, sometimes I look at charts like this to give me ideas.
DeleteLike Karen, combining Chinese zodiac, I'm a Water Snake Capricorn. The water snake turns out to be good at setting goals and reaching them, knows how to do her job, but puts family first, and doesn't crave attention. This is pretty much me. And many Capricorn traits fit me as well. The interesting thing is, I was actually due to be born in April, not January. Aries doesn't fit me at all. So, would my personality have been different had I not been so anxious to get out into the world?
ReplyDeleteI love these combo signs. I'm going to have to figure out what mine is.
DeleteI find all of this interesting, although I think of it as more of a window through which we can analyze ourselves, rather than our futures written in the stars. Just for the record, I am a Scorpio. Some of my friends have been known to say, "You are SUCH a Scorpio." Others just try not to piss me off.
ReplyDeleteLOL Gigi! And I agree, you are such a Scorpio! But only the good parts!!!
DeleteI knew I liked you, Gigi!
DeleteI am too am very much a Scorpio! Almost all of it describes me exactly.
DeleteLOL, Gigi, that's hilarious.
DeleteGoing on the record as a Fire Dog (Pisces) // James Randi once gave a group of college students in one of his lectures the exact same horoscope/ It was interesting that they all agreed that it matched their personalities. Might have to do with the general terms used. But then Myers Briggs sort of has the same flaws. In another generation I suspect we will be using DNA like Astrology did in the past, to teach us about ourselves
ReplyDeleteOh, that's a rad thought. Break down your DNA to figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Hmm.
DeleteComing back to tell this fun story. Many Libras are known to be indecisive. As a Libra myself, I know there are times when I am unable to easily choose, especially if there are more than two choices.
ReplyDeleteI once hired a young woman assistant, whose birthday turned out to be five days after mine in October. I said, "Oh, you're a Libra. Tell me, do you have trouble making decisions?"
She said, "Yes! No! Well, sometimes."
We both cracked up.
I have had that exact conversation, and have said exactly the same thing: Well, yes and no... I still laugh, thinking about it!
DeleteLOL, that's hilarious.
DeleteI'm a triple Pisces (sun, moon, and rising sign), spread across the 1st and 12th houses. First house is how you appear to others. The 12th house is secrets and secret enemies. I've always said that means "what you see is what you get". Well, it works for me...
ReplyDeleteThat is a definitive sign. Wow.
DeleteOoh, I looked up my writer-sign-pals and I have Michael Crichton AND Truman Capote AND F. Scott Fitzgerald, AND Arthur Miller AND Kristin Hannah, and if that group is not perfect, I don't know what is.
ReplyDeleteThat is pretty perfect.
DeleteLike the song says: When the moon is in the seventh house, and jupiter aligns with mars, then peace will guide the planets, and love will steer the stars. This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius, Aquarius, Aquarius.
ReplyDeleteI love that musical :)
DeleteI'm another Libra. The profile says NOTHING about Writer's Block!
ReplyDeleteClearly shortsighted on their part!
DeleteI think the positives of my Pisces description fit, but two out of the three negatives are off. I'm not really secretive or vague. If anything I let people into too much of my life. The being weak willed an easily led is not me either. I wouldn't just follow someone into something because they wanted me to. it would have to be something I decided is right for me.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I've always thought there was a difference between February-born Pisces and March-born ones. When I looked this up, it appears I'm right about that. Neptune rules only February-born Pisces, and they tend to support the more stereotypical dreamy Pisces, being highly imaginative, creative, and idealistic. March-born Pisces are more grounded, practical, and ambitious. On the bad side of my Pisces is indecision. My birthday is February 24th.
It is fun looking up what famous people, including authors, who share my sign. I came up with Albert Einstein, Amy Tan, Ralph Ellison, Dr. Seuss, Edward Gorey, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, John Steinbeck, Khaled Hosseini, Henrik Ibsen, John Updike,
Anthony Burgess, Voltaire, Victor Hugo, W.E.B. DuBois, Rainbow Rowell, Billy Crystal, Amanda Gorman, Elizabeth George, Sidney Poitier, George Washington. I need to stop, but I liked the rest of the actors and actresses I share the Pisces sign with, too.
That is an impressive list. I think you're right about the Feb vs. Mar - that fits the Pisces I know, too.
DeleteYou've reminded me of all the times my sister would choose the restaurant when she tired of Mom and I (both Libras) dithering over possibilities. Fun times. Also reminded of the guys in the '70s who thought "What's your sign?" was a clever pick-up line (not as fun). The ways we humans try to make sense of the kaleidoscope of this world . . . fascinating. <3
ReplyDeleteToo funny! Yes, it is fascinating.
DeleteOn the one hand, I don't believe in astrology. On the other hand, I'm a Capricorn, and that description fits me. Except the miserly part. OK, also the miserly part...
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha ha! Too funny.
DeleteThough I am a Capricorn, I have no idea if the description fits me? Sometimes I am an extrovert. Sometimes I can be an introvert. I love to travel. I love to learn new languages. I love the color Green / Blue / Purple. Clothes in these colors look good on me. Black is Not my color with my fair skin (you can see the blue veins!). Not a fan of brown. Which famous authors share a birthday month with me? That's a google plan to see who shares my birthday month. the Duchess of Cambridge (Catherine) and the Countess of Wessex (Sophie) are Capricorns like me. Former First Lady Michelle Obama is a Capricorn too. Katie Couric and I share a birthday though different birth years. My cousin and our grandmother share the same birthday in September and they both are left handed.
ReplyDeleteDiana
It's all so very random, isn't it? I love that you share birthdays/star signs with cool people :)
DeleteMost of Cancer fits me. I think I am more even-keeled than their description and would say I am very loyal but not clingy. My sister is also a Cancer ( only 1 day between our birthdays, 5 years apart) and we are very different in personality.
ReplyDeleteMy birthday falls in between signs. Some places have me as one sign and another has slightly different dates and I’m another sign. I have traits from both but I’ve always been sad that I don’t have an official sign.
ReplyDelete
