Jeopardy Moment: The Plot and the Pendulum

JENN McKINLAY: Release day is always a thrill!

ORDER TODAY!!!

My next library lover's mystery is coming out on Tuesday, October 11th, and I have to say it's been quite a ride thus far!

First, the book title was used as a Jeopardy! clue. Simply amazing! No, they don't tell you it's going to happen. I was just lucky that a member of the FB group McKinlay's Mavens saw it and posted it. I'd have been crushed to have missed it.

THRILLING! Right? Never ever ever would I have thought I'd have a book as a clue on Jeopardy! And the $1000 category to boot! So fun.

Of course, I'm signing the book at my local bookstore, the Poisoned Pen, along with my recently published cookbook. This is why my bookstore is awesome. They carry and promote ALL of my work. Seriously, if you want a specialty item by an author, the Pen is your go to bookstore no matter where you live!

Here are the links to watch if you can't attend in person: Poisoned Pen YouTube or Poisoned Pen FBLive

And finally, I was quite chuffed to receive a starred review from Library Journal for The Plot and the Pendulum. Given that it's the 13th book in the series, I occasionally worry that my readers have series fatigue or that I do, but this review assuaged my fears and I am ever grateful.

A trifecta of awesome! Yay!!!

But now I have to ask, do any of you watch Jeopardy! or any other game shows? It's been a minute for me, but they're pulling me back in...LOL.

  1. Lucky number thirteen! A JEOPARDY! clue and a starred review . . . how exciting and so well-deserved . . . Congratulations, Jenn . . . .
We watch JEOPARDY! and Wheel of Fortune, but that’s about it for game shows . . . .

  2. That is all fabulous, Jenn! Such a great title, too. I'll try to catch your event - is that 7pm Phoenix time?

I don't watch any game shows. I couldn't make out the title of the category the guy picked - what was it?

    1. Also, I had no idea we were both writing about skeletons in the wall at the same time! Resulting in completely different stories, of course. Can't wait to read yours.

    2. Tis the season for skeletons, Edith! LOL.

  4. What fun that must have been, Jenn! Congratulations!

When I watched TV I liked to catch Jeopardy when I could. But it's been years, so I missed all the recent drama with Alex Trebek's illness, then death, then the jostling for replacing him, except to read what friends had to say.

  5. Congratulations, Jenn! I've got it queued up to listen to it next week and can't wait. I never miss Jeopardy (I actually record it and watch it the next day while I eat lunch!) and I remember smiling when I heard that question. Yes - sigh - it would truly be incredible to end up as an answer on Jeopardy. That's definitely something to add to your list of accomplishments.

  6. Jenn, congratulations on the starred review and all the buzz. I love this series! The women are great, of course, but Sully, sigh. I read the excerpt you shared on Facebook and we are going to have a really good time!

If we are home at lunch, we watch the noon news. Here it is preceeded by The Price is Right. We frequently tune in just in time to see the Showcase round. Such exuberance!!

  8. JENN: Having your book title as an answer on Jeopardy is soooo cool! And yay for the LJ starred review. Lesa Holstine.is a great advocate and supporter of mysteries.

NO, I don't watch game shows since I haven't had cable TV for a decade. Even then, I hardly watched any.

  10. My parents were diehard Jeopardy fans, my sister has taken up the torch :-) Like Grace, I haven't had cable for years, so no Jeopardy for me. But, gurrrl, what is this 'series fatigue' of which you speak?? NO WAY!! Congrats on your many accolades--all well-deserved, Jenn!

  11. Congratulations Jenn! That is so cool.
I remember mom watching Jeopardy when Art Fleming was the host. My parents never missed it. In dad's later years, we used to joke about "loud Jeopardy". My son passed the Jeopardy audition, but then was never called, so we were zealous Jeopardy watchers for years. Did you know that there's a Jeopardy plug-in you can use on your computer that lets you go through each board and answer the questions and it keeps track of the score and compares you to the contestants? My son used to do that every day. Of course there's no time limit, so it's not a fair comparison.

  12. Congratulations, Jenn! Seriously, one of us is going to have to change. Either you write more slowly or I must pick up my reading speed! I'm not ready to give up my other favorite authors just yet but I seem to be going behind on your works. Oh dear!

I used to watch Jeopardy and loved it. My kids encouraged me to try out for it but I never did. I don't watch any more. See above for my time problem!

  13. I saw that episode. Unlike the Jeopardy contestant, I knew the correct answer! The show isn’t the same without Alex Trebek and I don’t watch it regularly anymore. I do watch the Poisoned Pen author events regularly though. That’s how I found The Jungle Reds. I look forward to yours and the book!

  14. I absolutely love Jeopardy, and used to watch it all the time. First, let me say, having your book used as a clue is unbelievably amazing! So thrilling, and I cannot believe that contestant didn’t just guess the answer! Nevertheless, that is incredibly great. Love love love it!
Many years ago I did a series of stories on how to get on a game show – – I know, hilarious – – and toured the whole Jeopardy program, including taking the Jeopardy test! Which, according to Alex Trebek, I could have been on the show if not for conflict of interest because of being a reporter. And I got to stand on this ser and try the buzzer, which is very difficult, because there’s a delay.
We all know lots of people who have been on, right? Meg Gardiner, and Brendan Dubois, who else? And both have won!
But my hugest congratulations on your new book, Jenn, and all the accolades! You are absolutely amazing!

  15. Hank, yes, my sister-in-law was on JEOPARDY! I bet we all know really smart people :-)

I remember watching all the time when I was a tween and we lived at my grandmother's house for a few years. Grandma was a major fan, and we even had the home game - which back then was not fancy and digital but literally little cards underneath little covers!

Jenn, I think the only thing cooler than having your title as an answer on JEOPARDY! would be to have it show up as a clue in the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. So that's the next goal you can shoot for...

  16. Jenn, I don’t know how you have time to write so many books and to write them so well! Congratulations on having your book be a Jeopardy clue! When I had cable I faithfully watched Jeopardy, and often watched Wheel Of Fortune as well.

Now I have some reading to do…

  17. Congrats! I did catch that category; such fun to see your and other authors I know show up. I watch Jeopardy sporadically, usually a couple of times a week. There are some other game shows I enjoy, but it doesn't make up a huge amount of my TV watching.

  18. Congrats on the launch of both books, Jenn!!!! Used to watch Jeopardy! Unfortunately, my TV is on the fizz and I cannot always get reception despite having cable.

Thanks for the reminder! I am going to order your books from Poisoned Pen today!

  20. Wow, Jenn! A Jeopardy clue and a starred review! You are on fire, dear lady. I love the cover of this new book, too. And, your fabulous Fairy Tale Cupcake Cookbook poised to be loved by all. Congratulations on all of it.

I don't watch Jeopardy because I don't have the television on during the time it airs, the middle of the afternoon here, at 3:30. It's a really odd time for me. I know I could watch it on On Demand or record it, but I tend to watch game shows that happen to come on when the TV is normally on. I don't really search them out. I watch Family Feud sometimes because it's on at 6:30 here, when I'm apt to have the TV on after the news.

  21. Huge congrats, Jenn! And what a great cover! I usually buy your books in hardcover but have pre-ordered Plot and Pendulum on Kindle so I can indulge on my trip!

  22. Congratulations, Jenn. So much to celebrate.
That book cover has all the elements that would excite a mystery reader, as does the plot based on the description.
The library lover series is not one I've read - so I just ordered Book 1. Very excited to start a new series and I will be up to book 13 before I know it. Keep 'em coming.

  23. Congrats, Jenn! That much success must have you in a whirlwind of happy. I watch very little tv. Mostly stream. But sometimes I feel as if I'm missing out on modern culture. Am I?
