When Life Becomes a Sitcom by Jenn McKinlay

Sometimes life really does feel more like a sitcom written by Larry David (Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm) than real life. In my case, it happened at Bouchercon and guest starred Eriq La Salle (unbeknownst to him).

Opening scene: After enjoying pre-dinner cocktails/mocktails with this crew of miscreants (i.e. my plot group buddies and their spousal units)...

Don and Kate
Charlie, Paige, Jenn, and Chris (aka Hub)

...we made our way to the elevators to go to dinner. The doors opened and there was Eriq La Salle with another conference goer. Of course, everyone is super chill and says nothing but silence makes extrovert me itchy, so I felt compelled to tap Eriq's arm and say, "I loved you on ER."

He smiled and said, "Thank you."

Silence returned and then someone in my crew (I think) said, "ER? When were you at the ER? Why were you at the ER?"

Naturally, I felt compelled to explain, "No, he was on the show ER. You know, created by Michael Crichton, took place in an emergency room."

To which Eriq, looking at the floor, said, "Feeling really uncomfortable now."

I was confident he was joking and I was on a roll, so I kept going. "Remember? He played a doctor."

The crew chatted about the show amongst ourselves (okay, mostly me) for a bit until Eriq said, "I'm right here. You know I can hear you, right?"

We all laughed and Hub joked, "Sorry, as soon as the doors open, I'll get her out of here."

"Please." Eriq sent him a mock desperate look.

Of course, we thought that was hilarious. When the elevator stopped, I thanked Eriq for being so kind and he took my hand in his and said, "It was really nice to meet you."

Now this would have been a perfect meet and greet at a conference of 1700 attendees where I would most likely never bump into the same person twice, but we were living in a sitcom, so the story doesn't end there.

My friends teased me mercilessly and hilariously that after I accosted Eriq in the elevator every time he came into a room that I was in, he would see me and bolt. I joined in and when I saw Eriq across the book room, in the lobby, or at a Guest of Honor interview, I pretended to wave to him and then continued the pretense that he saw me (he didn't) and did a quick pivot to get away from me. All good self-deprecating fun!

Now because I'm a slacker and a baseball fan, I dipped on the banquet and went to the Padres game instead (they won!!!). I also ate my body weight in hot dogs, tacos, ice cream, peanuts...you get the idea. (Hey, calories don't count at conferences especially when you're walking 18K steps per day)! After the game, Hub and I rolled back to our room and were ready for bed by 9:00 PM. Hardcore partiers, I know!

The banquet was still going, however, and I got a text from Paige telling me I couldn't go to bed because they had something for me. I waited for a bit but then texted back that I absolutely had to crash. I was thinking whatever goodie bag they had grabbed for me could wait. Paige then called (yes, actually called) and said, "Just come down to the main floor. Really quick. Trust me."

Y'all, I was in my pajamas! But I love my plot group besties so I put on pants and my baseball hat and threw on a sweatshirt over my jammie top and went downstairs.

In short order the crew (Paige, Charlie, Kate, and Don) arrived, with the addition of Leslie Karst who was now in on the joke, and they handed me Eriq La Salle's book LAWS of DEPRAVITY. This cracked me up, because it was the perfect gift.

BUY HERE

Then they told me to open it. Apparently, Paige and Charlie scored the book and then randomly bumped into Eriq (because, of course they did!). They asked him if he remembered the incident in the elevator to which he replied, "Oh, I remember."

Eriq very graciously signed it with Charlie's suggested inscription  "thanks for making me uncomfortable" which obviously made me howl with laughter. Truly, the best inscription I've ever received.

Now this really should be the end of the tale. Is it? No, of course, it isn't! While we were laughing and chatting on the far side of the hotel away from everyone, who should walk by? Yes! Eriq La Salle! What are the odds?!

I held up the book and yelled, "Hey, Eriq, thanks for the book!"

He grinned and strode toward me and said, "Jenn, can you read what I wrote? I was running out of room."

I replied, "Oh, yeah, I can read it." We both laughed and then I said, "You know we have to take a picture now."

And he said, "Of course."

So we did. End of episode.

Sitcom Jenn and guest star Eriq - What a great guy!

Now, everyone, go buy his books!!! He has two out in the Martyr Maker series, Laws of Depravity and Laws of Wrath, with a third, Laws of Annihilation, on the way in October.

So, tell me, Reds and Readers, have you ever found yourself living a sitcom or had a celebrity meeting that just went sideways -- in a good way?

  2. OMG, JENN, that trick by your miscreants to lure you downstairs was great! I know that my eyes bugged out when I saw ERIQ'S NAME on the Bouchercon program. I would have fangirled too if I have been able to meet him. Of course, I had ZERO sighting of ERIQ during the 5 days there...that's how it works when Bouchercon takes place in such a friggingly huge hotel!!

  3. I love this sitcom! I saw him on Debs' and Rhys's panel and didn't make the connection. When Elaine Naiman posted a picture of herself with him, and mentioned ER, I head slapped myself. I LOVED that show, watched every episode, and I loved him.

But then I never saw him again at the convention. What a treat you made a *special* connection with him.

How many stars were there at B'Con this year? Barb Hoffman had a similar encounter with the soap actor Jon Lindstrom.

    3. Karen in Ohio, IMHO, the stars include the Jungle Reds! I saw that actor from General Hospital. I forgot the name.

Susie and I walked past Harley Jane Kozak. I met Eriq LaSalle in the book signing room by accident while looking for someone else. It was cool chatting with Eriq and now I wish I had bought his novel because it is Not available at the library.

And there is Daryl Wood Gerber who writes many cozy mysteries. She was an actress and had been on Murder She Wrote.

Funny story. At my first Malice, I thought I met the actress Lauren Graham from the Gilmore Girls. I was not sure if it was her or a former Miss America or someone famous. Turned out it was Ellen Byron who wrote the Cajun Country mysteries. Now Catering Hall Mysteries and Vintage Cookbook mysteries. And she wrote for TV shows like WINGS.

  5. My husband and I are huge fans of the original show Dark Shadows and have been to several of the cast reunions. I was talking to David Selby (also of Falcon Crest) as he is from WV and so was my mom when he asked if my husband to take a picture of the us together. He waited till my husband was ready and he kissed me on the cheek. My husband tells David I'll probably never wash that cheek ever again.

I know that younger, single Judy had some moments like that, but maybe not quite as worthy of a sitcom because they loose in the telling. Your tale is lol.

  8. Since I have been to a number of comic conventions over the years, I've had a chance to meet any number of celebrities. I can't recall any interaction with them that went sideways. Certainly nowhere near the level of your interaction with Eriq LaSalle, Jenn.

  9. JENN: I love this story about you meeting Eriq LaSalle. When I read the names of B'con attendees and saw the name, I thought that name sounded familiar to me. Was that an actor from a TV show I saw? How many people would have the same name?

When I met him in the book signing area, I asked him if he was on the TV show St, Elsewhere or ER? He said ER. I watched so many shows that I could not recall which was which! He was gracious about it. We communicated via the speech to text on the Notes app on my smartphone.

While I was at B'con, I saw several actors - Daryl Wood Gerber, who was a guest star on Murder She Wrote; Harley Jane Kozak, Eriq LaSalle and that actor from General Hospital. At my first Malice, I met an actress from Dark Shadows. We had an interesting conversation during teatime.

A relative is a celebrity in the bluegrass music world. Growing up Deaf, the only music I was familiar was my relative's music. I often meet people who are big Fans of her music. Her baby sister once told me about walking to the park with their children and someone would come up to her older sister and ask for an autograph. Now my relative's daughter is following in her mother's footsteps and her grandmother's footsteps, establishing a career as a Singer.

When I was at Book Passage years ago, I met one of my favorite actors, Andrew McCarthy, who just wrote a book and he was teaching with the Travel Writers. He graciously signed my copy of his book and I have a photo of us.

Question for all of the Jungle Reds here: To your fans, I am sure that you are like celebrities. They know your names and they love your books.

What is it like meeting your fans?

Hank, I still think about your GOH interview with Jackie at B'con. It was a full room with so many people who love Maisie Dobbs mysteries.

It is too funny how some fans do Not believe that a Deaf person could be related to a Musician. Well, I am in good company. Dolly Parton has a Deaf relative.

  16. Jenn, that zany sitcom should DEFINITELY kick off the plot for another one of your wonderful novels! What an awesome B'con story. I have nothing to match it; the only celeb I ever met at a Bouchercon was Sarah Palin, who opened the Anchorage conference in '07. At the time, I was impressed by a governor showing up... The best I can do is when a soap opera star, Walt Willey from All My Children, picked me out of the crowd and kissed me. (I have it on video!) I've seen various celebrities at the races at Saratoga, but never approached any. 19. I thought I was going to choke on my coffee!

I haven’t met any celebrities—other than a couple of Reds!

But my brother had an experience: I don’t know if any of you who are in my age group remember the movie The Cardinal? Sime of the scenes were filmed in and around my parish church and parochial school. I was in the eighth grade. My siblings were in sixth, fourth, third, and first grades. At dinner one night, my parents asked if any of us saw any of the actors. My brother, the fourth grader, said “I saw Tom Tryon. I talked to him.” Tryon was the star of the movie. Dad asked “how did that come about? What did you say?”’ My brother said, with a sigh, “He was in the Boys Lavatory when I was there. He asked me “do these things flush?” (Our lavatories were not in great shape.) Later on, when my brother was an altar boy, he served at the wedding of Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor. They gave him and the other altar boys generous tips!

  24. I was leaving a bookstore in Los Angeles with my purchase, a tall older gentleman next to me doing the same. The store security alarm started blaring. We both jumped back inside the store. I turned to him and apologized for setting it off. He said he thought he had. We chatted about the alarm, waiting for a store clerk. Then I realized there was something about that voice. It was Sidney Poitier!! I was so surprised that I didn't even break all the rules in LA about being cool when encountering a celebrity and so I didn't tell him how much his work in film and civil rights have meant to my whole family.

  26. Jenn, that’s a great story and picture!

I saw so many of my favorite (or new favorite) authors at this, my first Bouchercon. The first night, I was standing at the outside bar, trying to order dinner for my friend (who was saving the table). A woman was next to me with the only menu in sight. I asked where she got it and she gave me hers. We started chatting about nothing and she asked if I was alone because she had just arrived (late due to fog at the SD airport) and hadn’t been able to check in or connect with anyone yet. I invited her to join my friend and me. We introduced ourselves and her name (Iona) clicked in the small part of my brain where synapses still fire. I asked, “Are you Iona Whishaw?” She was indeed! She asked, “Are you one of my readers?” Awkwardly, I had to admit I didn’t know. Her name was SO familiar but I thought it might have been either through JRW or Dru Ann’s blog. We ended up having the loveliest conversation with Iona, about anything and everything. At some point I very discreetly looked at my Good Reads Books-I’ve-Read page and I found that I had indeed read at least one of her books! I gleefully showed her the “Read” listing to which she said, “You ARE one of my readers!” A very nice lady and a fun way to start the weekend.
And Jenn, I wasn’t stalking her, but I encountered Paige probably 3-4 times. It got to the point at your interview with Kate, she was trying to set up her iPad to record you two and she turned to me sitting behind her and asked, “What do you think, Pat? Is this a good angle?” (Another very nice lady.) — Pat S
