AT MIDNIGHT COMES THE CRY

JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: Once more, dear readers, we get to see that exciting once-every-four-years-or-so event, the triumphant entry of Julia Spencer-Fleming's latest completed manuscript into the sacred precincts of St. Martin's Press offices.

Yes, you heard it right.

I have handed in the first draft of AT MIDNIGHT COMES THE CRY.

I can guarantee you this won't be the actual last page when we're done.

Now, keep in mind, this is one ugly baby. It's another Frankenbook, written in pieces over the past four years, with, I'm sure, plenty of dropped plot threads, characters changing personalities and names, and sudden unexplained events occurring with no previous notice. In addition, I wrote in ending in an M&M fueled rush, getting a normal week's worth of work done in one day. (That happens with every manuscript. I always have to rework the ending.)

As of writing this, I haven't heard back from my editor, although we've been in contact and he assures me he's working on it. It's undoubtedly in even worse shape than I thought. But you know what? I don't care! I finally, finally reached the end of the story, and if I have to redraft every page, it's still easier than starting ab ovo.

And, of course, I'm recovering from knee replacement surgery! The best advice I've gotten suggests I won't feel like doing any creative work for about eight weeks after, and that's what I've told my agent and editor. Fingers crossed, I'll be at it earlier, but, as I tell my communications students, it's better to underpromise and overperform.

Here's what I don't know:

How much work the manuscript needs.

Any sort of marketing plan, including giveaways.

The date of publication.

Here's what I do know:

AT MIDNIGHT COMES THE CRY will be available at fine booksellers everywhere at some point in 2025. Yay!

The other thing I don't know is whether or not this will be the last Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne mystery. I don't think so, but for the first time in almost eighteen years I'm out of contract, i.e., I don't have an agreement with my publisher to write more. So, not to be crass, but get those pre-orders in when they become available! The more readers who sign up for AT MIDNIGHT COMES THE CRY, the more likely it is St. Martin's will sign me up for more adventures with our friends in Millers Kill.

Thank you all, sincerely, for your support. I couldn't have done this without everyone cheering me on and reminding me they were waiting for the book. I'm extremely fortunate to be part of such a great community.

Okay, let's have a brag-a-thon in the comments! Dear readers, share what makes you want to blow your own horn!

    1. I truly do not understand why there sooo few males responding. As one of the few men who adore Julia’s writing Thank you Julia! I also found her from the suggestion of Ms Penny. I’ve preordered #10 and while waiting I’ve started the series over.

  4. Julia, I am so happy for you! I know this book had a lot of hurdles to overcome (a little Olympics reference!), but you’ve done it! Sorry,, but I think today’s blog is about blowing your horn, not ours. Many congratulations and good luck with your TKR recovery. — Pat S

  5. Oh. Thank. G**. You did it. You stayed the course. You are inspiring, you, yes you dear writer. Despite all the family matters, from death to new beginnings with your family of origin, the words kept coming. and let's hear it for M & M's. Now comes the next part, St. Martin's job and joy. FYI one of the Saints named Martin (Martin of Tours France) is also known as Martin the Merciful. May this be the Martin that guides you and the editors and the world on your book's journey. Very well done 5 stars.

  8. I am delighted with your news, Julia. How splendid you got it in BEFORE the surgery, too. We knew you could do it!

  9. Congratulations! I have to say that right off, the title grabs me. I hope you don't have too much work to do and that it comes out soon, because I want to read that book.

  11. FROM JAY:

Congratulations Julia! I'm sure this new book will be fantastic AND that there will be more to come.

Hmmm...toot my own horn? Well, the next article in my series The Cassette Chronicles will be the 250th one I've written. I never would've imagined that this goofy little idea I had to write on a message board I was part of would grow into a series on a "regular" website and that it would be well received by a number of the bands I've written about or go on so long.

And I have no plans to stop.

  15. Yay, Julia! Cue the triumphant parade! If everyone actually got one of those, it could certainly provide motivation, couldn't it?

Sounds like having a firm deadline of having surgery kicked your butt into high gear, my friend. Hey, whatever works, right? And now you get to heal, and enjoy the end of summer with Virginia while she's still here. A sweet time, with no deadline hanging over your head. Win-win-win.

  16. Yay Julia! I can’t wait to read it- will order as soon as up for pre- order!

  17. Congratulations Julia. We can’t wait until the new audio version is out. Now that you have made it to the highest pinnacle, (you are now a car book – the ultimate, higher in medals than even a gold), we will have to have more trips in anticipation. The car book edition is currently Book 3. We still have Kevin – I have to wonder if he will be in the new book?

  18. JULIA!! JULIA!! JULIA!! Huzzah!!!!! So glad you crossed that finish line of first draft! And I know a few people who'll be having a word, ahem, with St. Martin's if they don't re-up you for another however-many-Russ&Clare's you care to write! Heal away and we'll all be waiting for that draft to be polished and presented all shiny and new for us.

Tooting my own horn? At a snail's grandmother's pace, just finished Chapter 4 of my medieval fantasy/murder mystery. But the next page says "Chapter 5"!

  19. Congratulations Julia. I will preorder as soon as possible. I know how important that is for all authors.

Tooting my own horn? At present I am either serving up the fresh produce we are getting from our CSA or freezing stuff in meal size portions or sharing some with friends. My goal is to avoid wasting food. Our summer suppers are now planned around what is in season, and I’ve never eaten so many different vegetables and fruits in a summer.

Julia, how’s the new knee behaving? May we expect you to be challenging Usain Bolt or Katy Ledecky or Simone Biles anytime soon? Keep up with the PT, so important. And remember, motion is lotion. The more you can do the faster you’ll get through this. Much love 😘

  21. Such good news! I can't wait to read it. Woo hoo! It's smart to underpromise and overdeliver. I hope you are feeling up to creative work soon. My meditation word this year is humility, so perhaps I won't do any horn tooting.

  22. This is wonderful news! Wonderful for you to have a first draft done and wonderful for us and all your other fans because we'll get to read a new Clare-and-Russ book in 2025!

  23. Wanted to add that I know all your titles are from hymns, so I just looked up the lyrics for this one. Very dramatic: "I can almost hear the trumpet
    As Gabriel sounds the call;
    At the midnight cry
    We'll be going home!"

  24. Be still my heart! This is the best news I've heard in quite some time! I am poised and ready to pre-order as soon as you give the word! In the past several years most of my books have come from
the library, but this book will be all mine, bought and paid for. Heck I might just do a library request too! Why not?

You probably want to hop around with joy, but don't! Not yet. We'll so it for you until your knee is all better!

  27. What is that old song…”At Last My Love Is Here to Stay”? It may have taken “forever and a day”, but even if “the Rockies may crumble”, those wonderful magic words THE END are here to stay! Hooray and thank you, Julia! Looking forward to your full healing and reading this wonderful book. Elisabeth

  28. Congratulations, Julia!

My horn-tooting is that THE TRUTH WE HIDE, book 4 in the Homefront Mysteries series (pubbed in 2023), is nominated for the Shamus award in the Best Original Paperback category.

  35. Well done, Julia! Such happy news! And enjoy the summer with Virginia while you are recovering from knee replacement surgery.

Hoot my own horn? Simply put, I woke up this morning and I am grateful that I got to see another day. One of my paternal cousins died in her sleep and she was around my age. I work meritoriously to maintain my health. Fingers crossed that my weight remains steady this month instead of going up and up. Off to pre-order your new novel now.

  36. Do we pre-order AT MIDNIGHT COMES THE CRY through the St. Martin Press website? Looked for the book online and the last book we could find was THROUGH THE EVIL DAYS. Thank you.

  37. Congratulations, Julia!!!!
Wouldn’t it be great if it was possible for us to PRE-preorder??!! I would do it!
Take time now to concentrate on healing from your knee replacement surgery. Thank God for modern medicine! I still marvel that I no longer need to plan in advance how I’m going to get up from a chair!

  38. I’m looking forward to your next book! I enjoy them very much! I, too, am recovering from a knee replacement. Yesterday I did a painting. I’m at six weeks! So hopefully your creative juices are already flowing! Happy new knee!

  39. Hooray! We'll finally find out how things stand in Millers Kill. And Kevin. And all who matter to us. I'm afraid I have no accomplishments meriting a parade but my three tomato plants are still alive and I'm starting to reap the rewards.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh Julia, this is such great news that At Midnight Comes the Cry will be out next year. My accomplishments are connected to that, the fact that I am actually looking forward to something and believing now I can read. I've started slowly, and the Reds' books from last year are at the top of my list. Catriona McPherson's Hop Scot was the first because she dedicated it to Kevin and our family. I feared that I would never be able to read again, but I'm now hopeful that I'm back, at least to reading. Knowing that At Midnight Comes the Cry will be out next year will be a most welcome incentive to catch up on my favorite reading from the Reds. I hope your recovery is the butterfly of swimming that I'm watching now, fast and seamless.

  41. I've been SO looking forward to Clare & Russ's continuing saga, so this is a mixed blessing & concern that it could be the last! BTW your knee WILL be better if you are a good girl and do the PT. You will be able to go down stairs again, just don't push it. Your brain will be ok sooner than later but enjoy the Olympics for inspiration!

  42. Congratulations on your completed manuscript! And so happy to have Russ and Claire to look forward to next year. I know this is a labor of love. Your readers and followers thank you!

  47. Wonderful news! I have just reread the whole saga for the 3rd time and can hardly bear to wait for the next instalment. I pay respectful homage to your talent and skill and sheer grit.

  48. Count me as one who cannot wait for your next book - and hopes there will be many more about Claire & Russ!!

  49. My friend gave me I Shall Not Want & after reading in a day, got all the others. Have just finished the last one, Hid From Our Eyes. Wow!! Can’t get enough mysteries & then to have the characters you love & root for to boot. Can’t wait for At Midnight Comes the Cry. I’m passing all the others back to my friend who found the series so she can get ready for #10 in 2025 right along with me & praying for more. Best of luck with knee rehab.

  52. Will there be a way to preorder the audiobook?

    ReplyDelete
  53. In my early days as a school teacher, I discovered your books at the local library. I fell in love! Eventually, I had to wait for the next installment and the wait was long and murderous. I showed up one Saturday and casually turned to the stack. Your LATEST!
I let out a scream that brought the library patrons to their knees and my young daughter came running scared to death. I was mortified, but my excitement could not be contained.

  54. I am late to discovering Clare and Russ, but I am absolutely hooked. I have all the books in the series with one on the shelf waiting to be read. I went online to see if there was ever a new novel coming and am now thrilled to hear about one coming next year. I will preorder for sure. Please, please, keep on with the series.

    ReplyDelete
  55. From another avid reader of your Clare and Russ books, please don’t stop! I love their stories. I have all your books in the series and have read them all at least twice. Looking forward to your new one.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Finally! I've been waiting for this news for years, particularly after the cliffhanger ending of your last book. I think it may be time to reread the series before the publication of your next book. I usually wait for the paperback to come out, but I'll be lining up to buy the hardcover when it's published. I'm sure it will not disappoint!

  57. Julia, I’ve been a fan of yours from the beginning. I’m turning 90 in January and looks like I may live long enough to read it. 😉😉
