JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: Last week, PEOPLE Magazine
announced their Sexiest Man Alive for 2024: John Krasinski. I
approve this choice, because even in his action-man roles like Jack Ryan,
Krasinski exudes a kind of endearing normalness. He has an attainable level of
sexiness. Apparently, the magazine has been crowning The Sexiest Man since
1985, which, wow. Some of their choices have aged like fine wine (Mark Harmon
‘86, George Cloony ‘97, and some have… not (Mel Gibson ‘85, Johnny Depp ‘03 and
‘09.) Depp twice, PEOPLE??
I also approve of some of this year’s more vintage choices, like Joshua Jackson, Matt Bomer and (deep sigh) Pedro Pascal. Show me a man with some smile lines, please. On the other hand, I can recognise Manny Jacinto and Timothee Chalamet are beautiful, but they’re, you know, boys relatively speaking. If you’re young enough to be my son (or, God forbid, grandson!) I’m sorry, I cannot apply the word sexy to you.
I want PEOPLE to start putting out a second edition for ladies of a certain age. We know sexy is more than smooth skin and a piercing gaze. Does he carry out the trash without being reminded? Does he turn himself over when snoring? Will he pull over into the next rest stop if you ask, even if he doesn’t have to go?
How about you, Reds? What traits do you think should be considered for Sexiest Actual Real Grown Up Man Alive, and do you have any nominees?
RHYS BOWEN: For much of my adult life it was always
Robert Redford and Paul Newman. No one sexier. I even had a pin up of RR with
his shirt open on my bulletin board. Now Paul is gone and RR is very, very old.
So for me George Clooney is an obvious choice. Denzel Washington. Ryan Gosling maybe? I tell you who: Paul Hollywood from the Great British Baking Show. Those eyes!!!
HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: Well, Gregory Peck. Cary Grant. Idris Elba. The guy on Tracker, whoever that is. Inspector Morse. Hugh Grant in Love, Actually. Attributes: they think I’m really funny. They do not question the number of shoes or black jackets. They know what to have for dinner every night and often make it. They have a passion for something, they’re involved with it. They like to learn new things. They are NICE and conversational, and don’t mind chitchatting with people while I hide. They are genuinely interested in the world. And they think people are basically good. Plus, confident without being self-centered. Good grammar. Loves children. Loves the ducks in our backyard. :-) And a great sense of humor.

JENN McKINLAY: I like John Krasinski. He’s a cinnamon roll hero (as we say in the romance industry) meaning he’s not an alpha but rather a sweet dependable beta. I prefer betas, mostly because I’m not very good with people (men or women) telling me what to do, how to think, etc. But if PEOPLE was going for a hot beta…um…Pedro Pascal is right there!!! He is so funny and versatile and, yes, I am 100% going to see GLADIATOR II.
Unsurprisingly, humor is what always wins me over. ALWAYS. I
still joke with the Hooligans that it’s a good thing their dad is funny or he’d
be single. As for men (besides Pedro) who are easy on the eyes and can deliver
the humor (sometimes surprisingly), I have to go with Ryan Reynolds, Keegan
Michael Key, Channing Tatum, Colin Firth, and Jon Hamm.

HALLIE EPHRON: For me, forever and always, Patrick Swayze. He always comes across as quintessentially NICE. Even moreso because he was (reputedly) happily married. And weirdly I do like Alan Rickman. He’d be so interesting. I know, they’re both dead. Details, details.
DEBORAH CROMBIE: I know everyone says that Hugh Grant hasn’t aged well. So, maybe he has a few more wrinkles than he did in his rom-com days, but I think he might be more appealing now, smart and funny with that sly, dry British wit. And he’s apparently besotted with his wife and kids, which makes me like him even better.
But speaking of aging well, oh my, how about Patrick Dempsey? He was, I just saw, People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2023, so I have good backing on this pick! (I think a young Patrick would have made a fabulous choice for Rhys’s Darcy O’Mara.)
But my top vintage pick goes to Stanley Tucci, having just
spent fourteen hours or so with him on Searching for Italy. Funny, intelligent,
besotted with wife and kids–those attributes keep coming up! I like the NICE
guys!

Tony Curtis, back in the day. Funny, devastatingly handsome--those eyes!, and hey, Coralee, his voice! He smolders, vamps, and romps in Some Like it Hot. At the time all I knew was his onscreen persona; today his personal life would give me pause, but his daughter Jamie has his same spark, and it reminds me why I was drawn to him.
ReplyDeleteFor many of the same reasons I have always thought Gene Wilder was sexy. I know this is not a popular opinion, but he checked all the boxes: Funny, intelligent, wicked smile and kind eyes, and was (reportedly) a great husband to Gilda Radner.
Can you tell I highly value a sense of humor? I've always thought it was a sign of intelligence, too. Looks matter less than being able to laugh, and without making a joke at others' expense. Naturally, my husband falls into this category! And he reads, something we value highly in one another.
My free pass as well as candidate for sexiest man alive is rock god Jack White. I have to say, the recent choices of Patrick Dempsey and John Krasinski surprised me. They seemed a bit dated. More so for Dempsey. Krasinski (sp) has a thriving career as a director as well as an actor. Sidebar: I once showed his wife Emily Blunt how to gas up your car at an ARCO!

I used to like the doctors in MASH – I think it was more the humour and the empathy than any looks. I would suggest Justin Trudeau (Prime Minister of Canada – he can wear a suit, or just pants and shirt). Final choice I don’t know why, is Ross Trethewey on This Old House. He must work out because his muscles are taught, and he is tall, but not muscle-bound. He walks well. Just something about him makes me look at him, not listen to his newest cell-phone whats-it.

DeleteWhile I do love a good laugh every day, sometimes the guy with a great sense of humor also comes with a need for lots of attention and that’s a major turn-off for me. I find a guy who is smart, has a talent or two (cooking would be my #1!), and can fix things (cars, house stuff, home improvements), to be sexy to me! (Lucky for my husband he ticks all these boxes!). While he doesn’t play a musical instrument (yet, maybe in retirement!), he and I love the same music and go regularly to shows. As far as actors go, George Clooney is classical handsome and I love his cheeky humor. He doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. Now that he has won the heart of an intelligent woman, he has earned my respect haha! Edward Norton is also low-key sexy. Stays out of the limelight too. Love that. But Robert Redford in his younger years takes the lead forever!

DeleteAmong the "older" guys, you can't beat Colin Firth. But for the younger ones, my vote would be for Ramon Rodriguez (TV's Will Trent) and Bridgerton's Luke Newton (featured in season 3). They are just drop-dead gorgeous. And in both cases, they look even better away from their shows(see them instead on late night talk shows and other interviews). I usually like the ones who seem like they would be fun to talk to and could be down-to-earth even in the face of adulation from women.

DeleteOh I am in love with your choice of topic today! :-) Why not some eye candy conversation for the ladies.....I agree about vintage choices. Some men age better as they mature. I never would have given George Clooney a second look when he was much younger. But now....Not only that salt and pepper hair but the confidence he exudes is phenomenal. He carries himself so well and those smile lines around the eyes as well as his sense of humor is so appealing. John Krasinski would not have been my first choice but he is a local boy who made good and he is a very funny man. A sense of humor is very sexy in a man. So here's my list ~ Clint Eastwood (ever since he was Rowdy Yates in Rawhide I crushed on this man), Cary Grant (I'm with Hank on this one, too. Handsome AND funny), James Garner, Jimmy Stewart (big time), Idris Elba, Johnny Depp (when he was younger....savvy?), Derek Jeter (I love baseball...lol), Joe Mantegna (the mature version plus like Gary Sinise he honors and respects our veterans), Pierce Brosnan, George Harrison (who was my favorite Beatle) and so many of the British actors including Michael Caine who I had the...gushing...pleasure of meeting. (Who can resist an English accent?) I think there is plenty of bad boy/good guy mix in that list but admittedly I prefer the good guys most of all. But at the top of that list is and will always be my husband Rudi. Without a hint of cornball intended here when I looked up from my desk and laid eyes on him for the first time 50 years ago I saw stars and heard bells go off. Jet black hair, bedroom eyes, roman nose...whoa! This Irish girl met her handsome Italian head on. In that instant I fell in love and knew he was the one. Not only was he blessed with handsome looks but joyfully also blessed with a loving, giving and loyal heart who is everything wonderful I could ever ask for in a partner for life. Plus always and forever my best friend. Forget the bad boys...In the end it's always about the good guys.

DeleteYes indeed...You're right...Everyone had a favorite Beatle. I think Ringo had a secret fan club because most fans admitted to either only McCartney or Lennon as being their favorites. A secret club for George Harrison, too. I remember I was always in the minority because I loved the "quiet Beatle"...George Harrison. Over the years as each Beatle succeeded individually in their music careers both Harrison and Starr clearly emerged as musicians with talent and engaging personalties just like McCartney and Lennon. Now with McCartney and Starr both in their 80's, healthy and still touring what could be more sexy than that?!! Solid family men, too. As for Jagger...that man although his face is lined with "history"...is phenomenal! Still leaping around the stage like he's still in his 20's. And Keith Richards? After reading his autobiography "Life" some years back I likened him to be like a cat with nine lives! Another subject for another time but the "British Invasion" of music in the 1960's was just the best and changed rock n' roll forever. Speaking of which, how could I have not put Elvis Presley on the "sexiest man alive" list when he was in his early 30's and he was in that 1968 TV Comeback Special? Dressed from head to toe in black leather...omg...I was 18 years old at the time and I was mesmerized by his looks.

I never wanted Belgian Chocolate ice cream more in my life after listening to him talk about how to indulge oneself in that sweet treat! Look it up on YouTube...You'll be out the door in a flash (or having one!) heading to the store for Haagen-Dazs....sexiest commercial EVER!!!!

Qualities that I look for: KINDNESS. I am going to share a quote from a memoir that I just read. Loved the book THE DEAF GIRL by Abigail Heringer.
“He saw me for me but did not pretend that my disability didn’t exist. …….When we are in a group setting and he notices I am not hearing everyone, he makes sure I stay in the loop.”
Important to feel SEEN as a person, not a “label”.

I worked on a Hollywood biography of a major star of the 1930s-50s and in my years of research learned so much about the underbelly of the business that I tend to be cynical about actors. It's a bit like thinking of the great romantic heroes in books — most of them were written by women. (No wonder those heroes say the right things!) Similarly actors often owe their persona to a team of writers. That's OK. I can and do love those characters.

Contemporary sexy men like Justin Hartley, Ramon Rodriguez, Jesse Williams (on Grey’s Anatomy; didn’t think he looked nearly as sexy on Only Murders in the Building for some reason), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo are all nice eye candy. The older gentlemen who have aged well and whom you see outside of their Hollywood roles as people are sexier to me: George Clooney with his wife and kids (and his sense of humor!), Matt Damon is more cinnamon roll (thanks, Jenn, for the new term!), but he seems to be a nice man who loves his wife and family, and Milo Ventamiglia in his role on This is Us. I know nothing about him as a person but he was very sexy playing opposite Mandy Moore. As for my personal taste, a sense of humor is #1. I dated a guy in college who either didn’t have a sense of humor or didn’t get mine. Ugh! Nice eyes, kindness, cares for animals, helps in ways you wouldn’t think of when you’re young (like helping your aging parents), those are what count in my book. DeleteMargo, I was afraid of that. I thought Robert Bathurst's pronunciation of French was unfortunate, and he didn't capture Gamache's warmth. I listened to the new guy in a brief excerpt and I thought of course that his French was perfect but he did not seem to have the British overlay OR the warmth.

And I love a celebrity who doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. My personal crush is Colin Firth; I like everything about him. And I think Sean Connery was extremely sexy as an older man. George Clooney, definitely. And Patrick Dempsey. Mark Harmon, Hugh Grant as he has aged. Younger men: Sam Heughan of Outlander is gorgeous, as is Chris Hemsworth (another devoted family man). Ryan Reynolds is definitely a “cinnamon roll.” What a fun topic for a Friday. In my real life? Kind, intelligent, loyal, helpful, a sense of humor…. Oh, that’s my hubby!

ReplyDeleteMy choice is easy, Ewan McGregor. It's a sentimental choice, as well as thinking he's gorgeous, and he's Scottish. That is very sexy for me (yes, cue in Sam Heughan, Sean Connery, etc.). What sealed the deal for me with Ewan McGregor was his starring role in Moulin Rouge, with Nicole Kidman. They both sang their songs in the movie. This was Kevin's and my favorite movie to watch together, too, so I'm especially drawn to it and Ewan McGregor. His rendition of Elton John's "Your Song" is amazing. DeleteJulia, the Tucci Gang video totally cracked me up!! Thank you for making my day! I watched the little Seth Meyers segment that came up after. That was six years ago and Tucci must have just been recovering from his ordeal with throat cancer. One of the nicest things about Tucci is how much he is loved by so many friends.

(I'm sure he's having a field day with his brother-in-law John Krasinski :-) ) I especially loved him in the film "Big Night" with another great actor Tony Shalhoub. Their characters, Primo and Secondo, were quite convincing as brothers from Calabria, Italy who own an Italian restaurant in Jersey Shore, 1950's. The music is spot on perfection and the movie is wonderful! Everyone should see this film especially if they need a bit of cheering up.

ReplyDeleteAll these posts are fun to read, and I agree with lots of your choices. I'll start with when I was a teenager; in those days, my movie heart throb was Michael York. Anyone remember him? Very blond, androgynous, upper-class-type British. Later, for quite a while, I thought Colin Farrell was very sexy, but now he's stopped playing roles in which he's allowed to be attractive. (He's a very good actor, I think.) Can't really be sure about anyone under 40; I don't go to enough movies anymore or watch US TV. If a good idea comes to me, I'll throw him in later!
