DEBORAH CROMBIE: It's surveys surveys surveys everywhere these days! They are driving me crazy! I bought a sweater at Anthropologie last week and I just had an email pop up asking me about my experience! (Sorry about all the !!!) And of course there is every doctor's appointment, every visit to the pharmacy (and they not only want a 1 to 10 rating, they want an essay after each question! (More !!!) Even the specialty dog food company sends a questionaire at least once a week. "How is your pup doing?" (My pup is doing fine or I wouldn't keep ordering your expensive dogfood!)
Do the surveys drive you crazy, too? Do you take the time to answer them? And do you think anyone actually reads them? Before my six week follow up appointment after my back surgery, I had to fill out a LONG questionaire with essay questions. When I went to my appointment, I asked the PA if anyone actually looked at these. He said, a little reluctantly, "Well, they get collated..." And filling this out took a couple of hours out of my day??
So, in the spirit of inclusivity, I thought it would be fun to do a little JRW survey of our own. Answer as many as you please--or not!! But I promise we WILL read your comments!
1) How often do you read JRW?
2) When do you read JRW? If it's in the morning, do you come back later in the day? (Those of us not in EST would love for you to say "yes!")
3)What features do you like best on the blog: Guest posts? Our essays? Our What We're Writing Week? Our occasional We Aim to Ruin Your Budget (aka our What We're Reading posts?) Our little cooking adventures?
4) If you are on Facebook, have you joined our Red and Readers Facebook group?
5) If so, have you enjoyed our Happy Hour LIVE chats?
6) Is there something you'd like to see more of on the blog?
7) And lastly, we know there are a lot of readers who never comment. We LOVE hearing from you--should we do more Reader Check-ins?
Thanks in advance from The Management!
1) I read JRW Every day
ReplyDelete2) I usually read JRW in the morning . . . and, yes, I do pop back.
3) I particularly enjoy the What We're Writing; I also enjoy What We're Reading . . . cooking time is always fun and the guest posts are interesting.
4) Yes, I joined the Reds and Readers Facebook group.
5) I love the Happy Hour LIVE chats!
6) I can't really think of anything I'd like more of . . . I always enjoy whatever is posted.
7) Reader Check-ins are fun . . . but I imagine there will always be some lurkers who don't comment.
Joan, you are our linchpin. We worry if you don't comment first!
DeleteTRUE!
DeleteEvery day.
ReplyDeleteIn the first hour of my morning (Eastern), and I check back midday or later.
I enjoy all of it.
Joined but don't go there very often.
I like the happy hour when I can get to it.
I love to hear about your personal lives.
Readers who don't comment are puzzling!
Oh, and I NEVER fill out surveys after doc visits or buying something. Just...no.
DeleteI do fill out some surveys but if they are more than a few questions, I'll stop and delete the email. Irwin never fills them out. The reason I do is that it seems that complaints are the only time that some businesses get feedback. So, if things went well, they should hear that, too.
DeleteMuch of my doctor’s reimbursement from Medicare is dependent on those surveys, yours too. Same with hospitals so I fill out every one of those surveys. I hope you both reconsider. So many physicians here are leaving their practices in favor of a concierge practice. They still take insurances but there’s an annual fee, varies but four figures always.
DeleteYikes. I will do those surveys asap, Ann!!
DeleteAnd thanks, Edith, we always love to see you here.
DeleteAnn, thanks for this information. I’ve been filling the surveys out because the doctors and/or the staff are so good at caring for me. Now I have another incentive. Elisabeth
DeleteHandling surveys is quite easy…don’t want to just don’t and delete email or toss the paper. Want to give honest answers and send the email or mail the paper back. And it is too early in my day, eastern time, to take this Red’s survey, so I’ll be back later, Deborah and The Management, maybe! Happy Saturday, all. Elisabeth
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday to you, Elizabeth.
DeleteAlicia Kullas here in Rome! 1 read daily. 2 depending on the day / schedule. Early reading today! I read in the afternoon and I come back to check for replies to my comments. 3 I love being introduced to new authors, but sometimes the initial post are too long. Sometimes I save them and go back and skim them later. 4 yes 5 no 6 I’d love to learn more about books like the novel about Julia Child 7 Reader check ins are fine especially if there are free books available!
ReplyDeleteHi Alicia in Rome! I just read a great bio of Julia Child by Bob Spitz called Dearie, The Remarkable Life of Julia Child. He was close to her and had access to her and a lot of her personal writings.
DeleteThanks, Alicia, and Anonymous. I saw that book by Bob Spitz too and was tempted to order it.
DeleteI have begun the The Secret War of Julia Child and it is very good.
DeleteMine came in the mail today!
Delete1. Read JRW every day.
ReplyDelete2. Early in the morning after playing NYTimes Connections & Spelling Bee. I gave up playing Wordle over a year ago.
3. All of it but especially love guest author posts, What We're Reading & cooking- related posts.
4. Yes, I joined but not so active now.
5. Yes, I love the live monthly HH gettogethers
6. Can't think of anything this early.
7. I met several readers of JRW at Nashville Bouchercon who said they don't comment but enjoying our input. I was a lurker for several years too.
I love meeting those "shy" readers at conferences and book signings!
Delete1. I read JRW every day.
ReplyDelete2. I usually comment although, if I have a big project, I will skip a day. If I comment early, I almost always come back to read what everyone else has written. Sometimes it is too late to answer questions people have left for me.
3. I love the "what we are writing" and "what we are reading" posts. I enjoy guest posts and essays. I love quirky posts that draw in a lot of comments.
4. I have joined the Reds and Readers group and post if it is relevant. I love reading the Reds posts there and try not to miss any. I wish that the JR Writers would all post there a bit more frequently.
5. I love the monthly event and seeing the writers interacting with one another.
6. I have learned a lot about the mystery genre from this blog. I had read very few mysteries and knew of very few authors before arriving here.
7. It's okay if people don't want to comment. Sometimes Blogger will prevent someone from leaving a comment and that can be discouraging. I think we have done a good job of giving positive support to newcomers and occasional commenters.
Totally disagree on the support of occasional commenters. There is a core group that comments to each other as if in conversation. I see many different commenters who never get a response. If someone has a slightly different take on an issue, freeze out ensues.
DeleteThanks for the input. We'll try to be more aware of that.
DeleteWell, I have a question for The Management: How did you get such a great photo of each of you?
ReplyDeleteAll those surveys are done by the company's or practice's marketing department, and I get the feeling that I am doing work for them that they could find out by asking me when I'm there. It's especially weird to have to critique my doctor.
1) Almost every day. 2) First thing, in the AM, with my first cup of coffee. If there's an especially interesting or lively discussion, or if I asked a question, I'll check back, sometimes to continue a conversation. 3) Essays the best, then cooking, then book chats, then guest blogs. 4) Yes 5) A couple times. 6) I think you already do an awesome job, or I wouldn't be here every day. 7) It is fun to "meet" other readers!
Having read others' comments, I would also add that an entire week of guest authors is wearying. It's not that I don't appreciate "meeting" new writers, and I totally get that the Reds mostly get that week off from writing a blog, but I am much less likely to engage that week.
DeleteKaren in Ohio, I think the person, who took the great picture of the JRW, must be a fan who loves their books. And perhaps they ate their vegetables when growing up?
DeleteKaren, I think we just hooked a wait person at the restaurant! We really should have tried to get more photos of all of us together.
DeleteI tend to engage in dialogue with people who identify themselves and hardly ever respond if the comment is anonymous. The few times that people have left caustic or sarcastic comments on this blog, they have been anonymous.
DeleteGood point, Judy.
Delete1) Every day
ReplyDelete2) In the morning, right after Heather Cox Richardson and Robert Hubbell. I often come back to read more responses.
3) What We're Writing Week? Our occasional We Aim to Ruin Your Budget (aka our What We're Reading posts?) Our little cooking adventures?
4) Yes
5) Alas, not yet.
6) More of what you’re writing and reading
7) Yes
Also, I love this group photo of you all!
ReplyDeleteI do too. It's great.
DeleteThank you, Suzette! That was taken at a restaurant in Dallas called Henry's when we were all here for Bouchercon in 2019. That was the last time all seven of us have been together! It's so difficult with everyone's busy schedules. We had four of us at Bouchercon San Diego last year, and five of us at Crimebake. We would have had six but Hallie came down with covid at the very last minute. And Boston was too far for Rhys to come at that time.
DeleteI hope, for all of your sakes, and ours, you all get together soon , and have photos!
Delete1) I read JRW every day; even if I don’t comment, I come here first thing.
ReplyDelete2) I do sometimes check back, especially if the conversation is clearly evolving by the time I join it in Central time.
3) I cannot pick a favourite feature — across the variety some posts capture me more than others but that stands to reason given the wide scope your blog presents. That is something I LOVE about JRW.
4) Yes, I have joined the Red and Readers Facebook group but I lurk more than participate there.
5) The Happy Hour LIVE chats are often at a time I can’t join but I have gone back to watch the replay. Always fun.
6) Keep up the variety of forms and guests. Long live JRW!
7) The comments and commenters are a vital part of the joy of JRW, so the reader check-ins are always fun.
Yes! to the other commenters! Some of us have formed very real and highly valued, albeit long distance, friendships.
DeleteYes, I met Edith, Grace and Pat S. At mystery conferences. Always wonderful reading the comments here. And I met all of the JRW except for Julia.
DeleteAgree on most of the commenters! However, there are a few who give us their whole life story and post a lot of not so appropriate comments. These few commenters are so tiresome, if they are dominating the conversation with their own agenda, I stop reading and move on with my day.
DeleteI read JRW and Writers Who Kill (I'm a member) with the headlines every morning. My fav is what we're writing, followed by what we're reading. If it's a provocative topic, I might circle back in the afternoon.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Margaret!
DeleteI love JRW and visit every day, first thing in the morning and comment when I have something to say. I usually check back later in the day.
ReplyDeleteWhat I would like more of is What We Are Writing and What We Are Reading. I also love reading about the interesting things that our Reds are doing. I like guest authors but more than one a week is overwhelming for me.
Trying to stay away from Facebook. It got to be a big time suck.
I think I remember someone posting about surveys before. Surveys in general. For some reason I remember reading that it is very important to complete the surveys from the doctor or other medical institutions, because their funding could be impacted. Since then I do try to complete those surveys, but usually I don't bother with other ones, especially about purchases, unless there was something I really liked. Or disliked. It is more my style to contact the company directly at their 800 number and talk to someone. Then they often send coupons, without me asking for them.
Judi, your comment on funding reminded me that I learned when working for a local museum, that funding was often based on the number of visitors, so if you go to a place like this sign a name - it does not have to be yours, if you are in cognito. All they do is count them - the staff reads the comments and hopefully does something if it needs a follow-up, but what is needed is the count.
DeleteThanks for the tip, Judi. Now I will go complete the doctors' surveys.
DeleteFrom Celia:
ReplyDelete1) How often do you read JRW? - Every day
2) When do you read JRW? - Daily
3)What features do you like best on the blog:
I like a mix, and particularly enjoy when you all chime in on a question or habit. I find a week of book recommendations can be overwhelming as who has the time?
4) If you are on Facebook, have you joined our Red and Readers Facebook group? YES
5) If so, have you enjoyed our Happy Hour LIVE chats? I enjoy them when I find them but it would be helpful to keep to a schedule. Plus I have had difficulty finding the link and other tech stuff on Fb.
6) Is there something you'd like to see more of on the blog?
7) And lastly, we know there are a lot of readers who never comment. We LOVE hearing from you--should we do more Reader Check-ins?
Do you mean like this post? Reader comments are fun, but again it can be a bit of a time suck and Blogger doesn’t allow me to receive notifications so I rarely get back to the blog to check for comments on my comment!
Thanks for asking though.
Celia, I'm seeing that your cooking guest posts are very popular! As for a regular schedule for the LIVE events, that was our intention but we've found it very difficult with seven us to find a date that will work for everyone every month.
DeleteUnfortunately for those on the west coast, your group events are in the middle of our work days.
DeleteFrom Celia: Thank you Debs, eagerly awaiting your next book.
Delete1) I read the blog daily.
ReplyDelete2) I read the blog in the morning. But I do come back later in the day when I post a reply in case anyone comments on what I say.
3) To be honest, I enjoy pretty much all the posts that go up, even if I don't have any response to some of them. The only ones that I would say rank on the bottom of the chart for me would be the cooking posts but this is due to the fact I don't cook and not a commentary on the quality of the post.
4) Yes I am a member of the JRW Facebook group.
5) I have enjoyed the live chats but sadly most of them I've had to watch/listen to the replay.
6) If there's something MORE I would like to see on the blog, I can't think of it right now. There seems to be a good balance of all things mystery related along with topics more personal.
7) I'm neutral on this since I do comment more often than not.
Thanks, Jay. And we always appreciate your comments!
Delete1) How often do you read JRW? -- EVERY DAY
ReplyDelete2) When do you read JRW? If it's in the morning, do you come back later in the day? (Those of us not in EST would love for you to say "yes!") IN THE MORNING
3)What features do you like best on the blog: Guest posts? Our essays? Our What We're Writing Week? Our occasional We Aim to Ruin Your Budget (aka our What We're Reading posts?) Our little cooking adventures? WHAT WE'RE WRITING
4) If you are on Facebook, have you joined our Red and Readers Facebook group? YES
5) If so, have you enjoyed our Happy Hour LIVE chats? YES
6) Is there something you'd like to see more of on the blog? CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING
7) And lastly, we know there are a lot of readers who never comment. We LOVE hearing from you--should we do more Reader Check-ins? NO, I'M HERE TO HEAR FROM THE MANAGEMENT BUT THANKS FOR WANTING TO HEAR FROM US
Thanks, Lorraine!!!
Delete1. Read daily,
ReplyDelete2. Very early morning. Occasionally will check back in later in the day.
3. Favorite are JRW's essay's and What We Are Reading. Prefer limited guest posts, sometimes they are a bit too much and too many.
4. Tried to join Facebook group but something went wrong and I couldn't get in.
5. N/A
6. Would like more discussions, essays from the 7JRW's about your lives and writing, new books, etc.
7. I check in daily and comment.
Thanks Debs for this opportunity to give our thoughts.
And thanks for answering! This is all so helpful!
DeleteI love the guest author posts, it is always great to have other authors posting. It is a great opportunity for the author to find new readers and the readers a new author.
DeleteI find those that say they do not want guest author posts very puzzling. This is a book blog, not a personal social group.
I too am sick of surveys! I always do the ones for my doctor, because she is the best--but right after surgery? No way! My dentist asks for Google or Yelp reviews, which I mostly don't do, but I have left them a nice FB note.
ReplyDelete1) Every day
2) First thing--I make my tea and then I get on my email. I read Heather Cox Richardson and then JRW. I mostly check in later too.
3) What we are writing and what we are reading--and also the weekly posts where you all participate.
4) Yes
5) I tried to attend last time and was waiting on the FB event page-- and it just kept saying it was going to be starting soon. I finally found the live event after it was over. I think I must have been waiting in the wrong place :(
6) It's great the way it is.
7) I usually comment and I like to hear from others, but the focus should be on the Reds.
Grrr, sorry it's been confusing getting on the FB chat. We'll see if there is anything we can do make it more accessible.
DeleteI LOVE that we are mentioned by quite a few readers as being next to Heather Cox Richardson. Now that's a compliment!
1. Usually read every day – 9am Atlantic Time (hour before Eastern) I have no idea how there are always a few replies before I even read things! I think Joan and Edith are on a different clock, they are up so early!
ReplyDelete2. Depending on topic and day means whether I come back. Interesting topic-usually back several times a day. Never know whether I should comment twice, as is this an essay or a chit-chat – shall we volley? Bad day at home or need a break – hope it is an interesting topic and return for the pleasantness and the sit-down.
3. Tend not to like other authors and their books. I know it is a good way to get an introduction to them, or to make us aware of a new book in a series. I read these, but can not deal with the ‘me, too’, ‘congratulations’ replies even though I know that is usually all that can be said. Then I am usually disappointed to find author is not available in any format in Canada. Well maybe a book book, but for me it is hard to read. See Annette’s books – would love to try them, but not available.
Love what we are reading, what we are watching and other like-minded chats. Also love when we review our traditions or memories of how we lived – it shows how we share so many memories together. It also lets us participate in world events gone by – Vietnam ‘Conflict’ now – it used to be a war, and other similar world events – even Dorothy Hamel’s haircut!. Which brings up topics like changes in language.
Sharing traditions – I am sure there will soon be the topic of American Thanksgiving and recipes/traditions. Although it is not my tradition, having already over-crisped a deep-fried turkey for our Thanksgiving in October, I always enjoy the recipes and things that others celebrate. Possibly there could be a week-after update – what worked, what didn’t and possibly with recipes or tips.
Celia’s Recipes – always a pleasure and usually tried. Health updates – yes we care. We need updates on the updates – how are all the knees doing? Pets – again we all have them. Maybe we could have a best recipe day – potato salad, cole slaw or lemon squares – once again, as seen in yesterday’s post, we all seem to like food or food-porn.
4. Joined Facebook, but don’t check page. Usually flip through if it pops in feed.
5. Happy Hour – usually not. Replayed the first one, but somehow I see they have happened after they have happened. Live edition is usually during supper – that’s a no-go, and besides by then, all I want is to chill and watch telly.
6. More of – maybe more guest essays, which may not have anything to do with flogging a book. Ask if any of us would like to write an essay and open up a discussion – it might be enlightening. Who knows what topics might come up? Butterflies, Master Gardening, knitting patterns, weather?
7. Reader Check-in’s. By this do you mean suggestions on how you are doing? What colour paint we suggest for your living room? Or maybe just are you there? Maybe you mean that I could ask Karen in Ohio for comments on tomato blossom end rot, or what seeds people are planting this year? Perhaps it is the health and welfare of Hank’s ducks? I do find that I peruse the names in the backchat every day and often wonder why there has been nothing from someone and wonder if things are all right. Maybe it is just a flitting question like yesterday as I was wondering when if might stop being grey and drissle-y, I also wondered how Julia got her wood in this year?
Hopefully, Julia will tell us this week! Thanks for all the great suggestions, Margo. We will be talking about them.
DeleteAnother comment on the original questions – do you answer surveys? No, because I got tired f surveys that were some too long psychology-oriented blabber in the form of a question where the answer had to be chosen from 1-10. (is the sweater that you are wearing red or blue – chose from yes, no, a little red, a little blue…) Yes or no would be fine.
ReplyDeleteMost importantly, after agreeing to a few phone call questionnaires where they asked for my age, and should I say over 65, they would reply “that group is filled”. Obviously old people’s opinions don’t count. Now I answer with a slam down, because old people don’t say bad words.
Are you sure about that last bit, Margo? LOL
DeleteMaybe in my head. I am very serene - NOT!
DeleteI read JRW everyday, morning, then check in several more times a day because I want to see all the comments. Favorites are your essays, what you're writing, what everyone is reading, guest posts--it's why I come back every day--so much to enjoy! I've joined the fb group and enjoy the live chats when I can make them. I think there's a good mix of topics, can't think of anything I'd change or add.
ReplyDeleteGenerally hate surveys and don't bother with them. Except these, of course! (Flora)
Thanks for chiming in, Flora! I alway look for your comments, btw!
Delete1. I read JRW everyday
ReplyDelete2. In the morning— it’s part of my early morning routine. I frequently check in again in the late afternoon.
3. I love “what we are writing” and “what we are reading.” But I also love posts that are about what you are doing, just everyday life. Generally I enjoy the guest posts as well- not all fit my interests but I love that you provide a safe place for writers and others to share their work and/or passions.
4. Yes, did join the Facebook group
5. I’ve been able to watch a couple and really enjoyed them. The scheduled times don’t always work for me, but I join when I can.
6. I can’t really think of anything to see more of- it’s pretty great the way it is!
7. I’m one of the readers who doesn’t comment. Don’t know why, really, other than my tendency to never comment on anything anywhere. (And I don’t usually fill out surveys.) I do read the comments and appreciate the feeling of community here. I also appreciate that you want to encourage us lurkers, but I don’t think you should have to spend valuable blog time doing so! Maybe VERY occasionally.
Thanks for commenting today, Cindy!
DeleteFrom Danielle
ReplyDelete1- everyday
2- in the morning while I take my breakfast. If I’m not gone all day, I’ll come back to read the other comments
3- what I like is the mix of the posts. Maybe not too many guests presenting a new book in the same week,
4- I’m not on Facebook
6- since I’ve read JRW for so long, I’ve got attached to the commenters and I particularly like when you invite one of them on the front page
7- I don’t like the word lurker, it seems negative to me. Even as only a reader in the first years, I felt as a member of a community.
There was a time when I commented more regularly and I’ve always felt welcomed. Now I don’t comment as often. If I have to leave home for the day, I don’t have time to. When there is a guest presenting a new book that doesn’t interest me, I prefer not to comment.
It takes me a lot of time to write what I think in English ( this one: more than half an hour). Sometimes, if I’ve read a comment that expresses what I feel (it’s often the case), it’s enough for me.
For everything cultural like shows, films or TV series , I usually don’t comment because my French Canadian background differs from yours and won’t help the discussion.
I think that the readers contribute to this blog that is a light in my day just by being there. But a check in once in a while is fun.
Thank you, Danielle, I also think “lurker” feels negative. I am a regular reader, I just don’t comment often. (barbara)
DeleteI don't ever use the term "lurker". It sounds like something from a horror movie! And we certainly never think of our readers that way.
DeleteGood morning from Texas, and thank you all for the very interesting --and helpful--comments this morning! For those who've asked, that photo was taken at Bouchercon in Dallas when we were all out to dinner. That conference was the last time we have all been together. Must remedy!
ReplyDeleteI have to pop out to the farmer's market but will be back to comment on replies in a bit!
Just noting, Deborah, how many folks have replied to THIS survey when also writing they DON ‘T reply to surveys. Reds and the rest of use are really interesting people to be around. Again, thank you. Elisabeth
Delete1) How often do you read JRW? Every day.
ReplyDelete2) When do you read JRW? If it's in the morning, do you come back later in the day? (Those of us not in EST would love for you to say "yes!") I'm in California, so I read JRW usually between 6:15 and 6:45 a.m. PST.
3)What features do you like best on the blog: Guest posts? Our essays? Our What We're Writing Week? Our occasional We Aim to Ruin Your Budget (aka our What We're Reading posts?) Our little cooking adventures? I love them all. I've gotten some great product information (e.g., eyebrow pencil, HeatTech) from the blog (not book-related), as well as wonderful book suggestions..
4) If you are on Facebook, have you joined our Red and Readers Facebook group? Yes
5) If so, have you enjoyed our Happy Hour LIVE chats? Yes, but I think I've only caught one or two so far. It's late afternoon here so I don't remember to attend.
6) Is there something you'd like to see more of on the blog? Can't think of anything.
7) And lastly, we know there are a lot of readers who never comment. We LOVE hearing from you--should we do more Reader Check-ins? You invite readers to comment every day, so I don't think more Reader Check-ins are necessary.
Thanks, Margie! I love that you've enjoyed our little product recommendations. Maybe we can do more of those!
DeleteI've already commented on the survey q's, but as far as the question about taking survey's - I've found that if I have a very specific complaint and I don't know who in the business/company to talk to, I know the survey will get this problem looked at because they are specifically asking for information.
ReplyDeleteAs far as guest book authors I generally skip through them. But occasionally one will interest me. For example, I just bought The French Ingredient by Jane Bertch because her book was highly recommended by Lucy. I started reading it around noon and didn't put it down. It was a great find here on JRW.
Same here! I bought it that day and pretty much read it straight through!
DeleteSo glad you enjoyed Jane Bertch!
DeleteEvery day
ReplyDeleteUsually morning but it varies
I like the what you’re reading and writing and guests best
I am on Reds and Readers but seem to mostly miss the moves when they are live
I don’t always comment
We like it when you do, Brenda!
DeleteThis is so interesting! Thanks to all of you who are posting. What makes me particularly happy is seeing how much there seems to be a sense of community which is what I feel every day on JRW. Your comments are as compelling as our posts.
ReplyDeleteYes!
Delete1) How often do you read JRW? Every day with few exceptions.
ReplyDelete2) When do you read JRW? If it's in the morning, do you come back later in the day? (Those of us not in EST would love for you to say "yes!") Yes! 99 times out of 100. There is always the odd day that life gets in the way.
3)What features do you like best on the blog: Guest posts? Our essays? Our What We're Writing Week? Our occasional We Aim to Ruin Your Budget (aka our What We're Reading posts?) Our little cooking adventures? D - all of the above.
4) If you are on Facebook, have you joined our Red and Readers Facebook group? Yes
5) If so, have you enjoyed our Happy Hour LIVE chats? Nope
6) Is there something you'd like to see more of on the blog? Call me silly, I'd like to see more what are you writing posts and slices of life.
7) And lastly, we know there are a lot of readers who never comment. We LOVE hearing from you--should we do more Reader Check-ins? Hum....not sure what those are!
Hi Kait! Sometimes we have just asked how everyone is doing. Especially if there's something like a big weather event.
DeleteAh. I'm sure I've responded, too. Those ARE fun.
Delete1. Almost daily.
ReplyDelete2a. In the morning, before work. 2b. I try to check back in around noon/lunch, if for nothing else than to see if someone commented on my comment.
3. I like the blog features. Though it does get frustrating when I keep reading about all these great excerpts for future books and keep having to wait forever for them. Sob!
4. Yes, I joined Reds and Readers.
5. Only been able to join one of the Happy Hours due to being at work when most have occurred.
6. I have no idea what more could be added. There's the guest chef during Julia's week. New authors to tempt me. Supportive environment during times of stress.
7. Readers Check In?
We love hearing that you find this a supportive environment. It is for us, too.
DeleteRead JRW every morning! Sometimes in the afternoon. (Q1 and Q2)
ReplyDeleteQ3: Favorite part: What We Are Reading This Week. I love everything.
Q4 and Q5: Unfortunately, I cannot log into my Facebook so both questions are Not Applicable now.
Q6: So many wonderful JRW posts. There are a few things that I would love to see in future JRW posts. Perhaps interview a children’s book author? Trying to remember if any of the authors interviewed in the past wrote children’s books. If an author wrote a mystery or fiction about Guide dogs for Blind or Hearing Dogs for Deaf, then I would love to see this author as a Guest in a future JRW post. And I love the recipes. Perhaps a dairy free gluten free recipe in a future JRW post by someone who bakes / cooks with DF GF ingredients ?
Good idea, Diana!
Deletethank you, Deborah!
Delete1) Every day
ReplyDelete2) Usually in the morning (EST) but often just whenever I get the chance during the day
3) All of these, but especially your essays, what you're writing, what you're reading
4) Yes to the Reds & Readers group
5) Haven't participated in any of the live chats
6) ?? don't know
7) I hardly ever comment--maybe only once or twice--but I love reading the posts, and sometimes I have time to read comments
AND) I hate doing the post-purchase, post-appointment surveys. I try to answer the ones from doctors' appointments, and I skip all the retail ones. If there was something really unpleasant about the event, I do try to let them know about that. I especially hate the ones from car dealers, where they tell you up front that if you don't give them a perfect score on everything, they'll get fired. Even if I give them a less than perfect score on something that was clearly and obviously not the agent's fault, like a manufacturing error. Grrr.
I haven't bought a car in so long that I didn't realize they were doing those awful surveys! That's like blackmail!
Delete1. Everyday (as long as we have power and internet, the hurricanes kept me away for too long!)
ReplyDelete2. I read in the morning and usually check back in at least once during the day.
3. I enjoy almost everything you post. Occasionally I am not interested in the guest author’s genre but I don’t expect every blog to appeal to everyone.
4.I do follow you on FB, don’t always see the posts on my feed.
5. I have not joined Happy Hour; I am an introvert and find it difficult to try new experiences with people I don’ t know
6.I think the blog has a wonderful mix as it is.
7. I don’t have an opinion on the reader check-ins. I enjoy reading this blog everyday but I don’t usually have anything to say :)
I also have no idea why my answers showed up so large! (Barbara)
Hi Barbara! On the Happy Hour, it's just the seven of us (if we can all make it) chatting and we do try to answer some comments that people are posting on Facebook, so hopefully you would feel comfortable just watching. We have a lot of fun.
DeleteSorry to answer so late, Barbara, but on the JRW live events, you can watch the video recording at another time to see if they are something you would enjoy. If you join live, you do not have to comment at all, just watch. The readers are not on the screen, just the writers.
DeleteSince retirement, I don’t have a set morning schedule, so I am a sporadic reader and poster. Between sleeping late and West Coast, I sometimes feel the conversation has passed me by so I don’t comment unless I have something really good. And that’s OK!
ReplyDeleteI have joined the FB group and have attended some HH, which are fun. I’m not very active on FB so I’m glad to see more mystery folks joining Bluesky, which has a thriving sci-fi community.
Appreciate you checking with us for feedback!
Hi Lisa! Yep, I have joined Bluesky and am liking it so far (although I don't need any more time sucks...) but have to stay on FB, too, with my author page and our Reds and Readers there.
DeleteSooooooo tired of surveys. I only answer if I think there is a bonus involved for the person who served me. My son got his haircut at Supercuts and the woman said she'd get $10 for a positive Google review. That I can do, otherwise nope, nope, nope. My time is my own, thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteBonus for a specific person who has helped me. Oh, yes, fill out the survey and make sure to put their name in the comments at least twice. Elisabeth
DeleteJenn, I have become more selective these days. I used to forget to fill surveys then my doctors moved to another facility. Now I always fill out surveys especially when I have an excellent doctor / ob-gyn / audiologist because I want the health plan to KEEP them! I only answer surveys if I can give a positive review!
Delete1. I read JRW every day
ReplyDelete2. First thing in my morning (I am in PST) which can range from 8-10, depending on how late I get to sleep in. And much, much earlier on those nights when I can’t sleep. And I definitely check back in to read the comments at least once a day.
3. I enjoy the What You’re Writing and What We’re Reading and the personal stories you share (be it about cranberry sauce from a can vs. homemade or bragging about your kid/husband/dog). A guest author essay is okay, but no more than one a week. I do love when you feature authors who are JRW-adjacent like Edith or Liz or Kim. What are we blog readers called? Reddies? The Reddies who are also authors. And Celia’s posts featuring a recipe are fun because she’s Celia.
4. Yes, I joined Reds and Readers on Facebook.
5. I try to catch the Happy Hours live. It helps that I am retired so usually available to watch.
6. I don’t know what I would add except that I agree with Deanna’s comment about supportive environment in times of stress. I have felt like this is a community since my very first time visiting. Over the years I’ve felt like I have, if not friends I’ve met, at least friends with whom I have much in common. In the coming months/years, this community might prove invaluable to my ability to cope.
7. This kind of a Reader check-in is great. It’s nice to see new commenters. — Pat S
And it's always great to see you here, Pat. I'm so glad I got to meet you in San Diego! We are loving all these comments about the sense of community. I think that is the main thing that keeps us doing this.

3. What you’re writing, what we are reading, your personal stories/comments, recipes, and some guest authors
4. No - I rarely check facebook
6. Love the blog just the way it is!
7. I have followed the blog for many years (too many to count!) but rarely comment. I am happy reading everyone else’s comments. Feels like checking in with family each day.
Thanks so much, Christie--that's the nicest compliment ever!

DeleteAnd, Mary C, our next one is NOvember 25!
DeleteI get survey questions regarding my MD appointments. I work for the same corporation. Just seems like a waste when you work for the same company
ReplyDelete1. Every day.
ReplyDelete2. Often not until my (Swiss) 11 p.m. or later. It depends on what kind of day I've had. The fact that I often check in so late is the reason I don't always comment. I apologize for not commenting every day, but there are days when I just can't bear to write another thing!
3. I enjoy everything, but I guess what I enjoy most is when one of you tells us about something going on in your life or something you're concerned about. Your concerns are so often similar to ours.
4. I have joined, but since I'm not active on Facebook, I forget to check. Besides, I'm afraid it's all I can do to keep up with the few blogs I follow.
5. No, I don't think that's ever going to happen, although I'm sure I'd enjoy them if I were there.
6. I'm content with all the content on the blog (hee-hee--I only noticed that after I wrote it!) You give us lots of variety: I read the recipes, the writing excerpts, the guest essays, each of your posts, your lists of read and to-be-read books, and I enjoy everyone's comments on all those things, too.
7. What's a reader check-in? Maybe I don't read every blog if I don't know what that is!
Hi Kim! We're always glad to see you comment any time of day!
DeleteWhat I meant by "reader check in" was just a post that gives more readers a chance to comment, including those who don't usually.
I read JRW daily, usually am (EST) but it depends on the day. I like the variety of posts. I’m not on Facebook. Thanks for the blog, I’m sure there are times when you’d rather do anything else but write a post. I can’t think of anything to suggest. I always feel welcome to comment but only occasionally post as I mainly just enjoy reading. Surveys? This is relatively short, has a known purpose and will be read. Most are too long, have irrelevant questions or answer choices and are too frequent. I also was unaware of the importance of medical surveys so thanks for those comments.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Becca!
Delete1. Throughout the day beginning with first watch

3. No bad posts / all varied and interesting. Esp what we are writing pages.
4.Yes have followed y'all on all your online presences including facebook. JRW's Reds and author pages
5. I have a hard time getting into the live chat. Still in the learning curve.
6. Would be interesting to hear from reviewers from time to time.
7. Once a month have a 'shy reader' post opportunity. Always nice to hear from everyone.
Love the "shy reader" suggestion, Coralee!
Delete1 ) Whenever it pops up in my feed, which is pretty much whenever y'all post ... although sometimes day or two delay
ReplyDelete2) Morning after Duolingo or evening ... after Duolingo
I m in Pacific Time, so I'm behind half of you
3) Most love it when you talk about writing & have guest writers ... I've picked up a lot of new authors AND it's made me talk about the nature's red in tooth & claw genre more with my reader friends which means you are sparking a lot of cross-pollination
Love most of your non writing posts too - my dream feed is 1 of those for every 2 writing & guest writer posts
But really I find you all inspiring that you've carved out professional space for yourself & banded together for what's clearly both professional & personal enjoyment
4) Duh ... that's how I found this blog (thanks to Deborah Crombie & Rhys Bowen)
5) Timing never seems to work out but hope to some time & love that you do them
6) I love it most of all when you talk about your craft & bring in the rest of your lives & how you have learned to lean into those distractions & obstacles
7) Keep doing what you're doing & FTLOTGIDBI ... please keep writing!!!
Thank you, Linda! (and I think we are talking about your #6 on Monday! It is a constant struggle.)
DeleteGood! As a writing-first-book writer I get a lot of inspiration from these posts
DeleteFollowing the women I love to read in general & reading this blog specifically has pushed me to write fiction again with more focus than the other times in my life that I've tried
Ooo, Linda, keep us in the loop on how it's going. You have lots of friends here, excited about new authors.
Delete1. Daily, unless I am traveling, and I then try to.
ReplyDelete2. I usually read JRW and comment in the early afternoon, Central Time. I come back a couple of times a day to see if there are new comments or replies.
3. What I like best is a hard question because I enjoy all the posts. I especially enjoy the ones where a featured author gives me new historical information. I think my favorite is "What are We Reading," as I love seeing what both like-minded and different-minded people are reading. It's always a treat (and a curse) to discover a new book for my list. Of course, learning what the Jungle Reds are working on in their writing is always exciting, and watching Julia and Celia cook is always entertaining, as well as instructive.
4. I am a member of the Reds and Readers on FB, but I admit that I don't participate a lot. Something to remember to do.
5. The monthly Zoom get-together is a great idea and helps us stay connected even more. I haven't made it to all of them, but I have loved the ones I attended.
6. I'd like to see an occasional post (doesn't have to be every month, probably a few times a year would do) on naming some books that helped you get through or deal with a tough spot in your life. For example, during the shut-down of the pandemic, I started and got up-to-date on Annette Dashofy's Zoe Chambers series. They really helped me have something to look forward to then. And, after my son died a year and a half ago, I've read or skimmed so many books dealing with grief or losing a child that I think I could recommend some of the better ones.
7. Yes, I'm in favor of an occasional reader check-in. Maybe, if they want, they could tell us where they live and take it one step further and say why they live there (work, grew up there, good schools, etc.) or name one positive thing about where they live.
All good suggestions, Kathy. And I am interested in our geographical distribution. I like knowing where our readers live and what it's like there.
DeleteKathy, I also discovered Annette's books during the pandemic and read the whole series that spring and summer. That's when I got my Kindle and loaded it with all of Jenn's cozy series, too. (And much more.)
Delete1) Daily.
ReplyDelete2) Usually before 6 AM EST. It posts at 5 AM and that's generally when I read it. I often come back later in the day to read the conversations, which I enjoy.
3) I like everything, though too many guest writers introducing their novels in one week starts to feel like work: a cocktail party of polite exchanges. (I was a headmaster's wife for decades.)
4) Yes, I've joined and enjoyed Reds and Readers.
5) I have not attended the Zoom meetings though they look like fun.
6) I love hearing about what you all are working on.

Selden, your #3 cracked me up! I totally get it!!

4. Yes, it is through Facebook that I access your posts.
5. Haven’t done it yet, but hope to.
6. Can’t really think of anything else that you should add.
7. The reader check-ins are always welcome.
Thank you, Claire, and nice to hear from you!
Delete1. Every day.
ReplyDelete2. Late morning. And about three or four more times.
3. I don’t prefer one feature over another. I like the variety.
4. Yes to the Facebook feature
5. I watched the first couple of Happy Hours, but I can’t seem to keep track of when they are. I’m pretty sure I’ve missed two or three. I really liked them!
6. Perhaps introduce us to more newly published authors? I’m sure it would be good exposure for them.
7. I like the reader check-ins!

You are a stalwart, DebRo!! We love seeing you here every day!

ReplyDelete2) I Also you read in the AM
3) I enjoy all your posts! Two of favorites though are the what we are writing and what we are reading weeks.
4)Yes i joined reds and readers
5) Love the live chats
6)Maybe even more of your essays - very interesting to see what is on your minds, and Julia's are usually a hoot!
7)Yes, maybe more reader check ins. I don't comment a lot, but am trying to improve.
Nice to hear from you, Christine!
DeleteSnickering, Susan. So...how likely are you to recommend our site to your friends and family? JUST KIDDING.
ReplyDelete1. Daily
ReplyDelete2. It varies
3. I enjoy What We're Writing and What We're Reading and Watching.
4. I'm in Facebook group.
5. Usually can't find events until they're over.
7. I find the term "lurker" offensive. I rarely comment because it seems the discussion is over by the time I read it in the San Francisco Bay Area
The conversation is never over, and I am proof of that!
Delete) How often do you read JRW? Every day!
ReplyDelete2) When do you read JRW? II rad it first thing--but often comment later, to see who has arrived. And I always come back!
3)What features do you like best on the blog: oooh, I love the mix.
4) If you are on Facebook, have you joined our Red and Readers Facebook group? of COUrSE!
5) If so, have you enjoyed our Happy Hour LIVE chats? YES! ANd the next one is November 25!!
6) Is there something you'd like to see more of on the blog? I almost said Cary Grant...
7) And lastly, we know there are a lot of readers who never comment. We LOVE hearing from you--should we do more Reader Check-ins? YES, I love that, I did it the first time out of blog desperation, I think, and I adore it.
I read the blog daily usually after 5 PM EST. I like most every topic. Yes to Reds and Readers and the chats.
ReplyDeleteWhen I do comment, I check the box to get the comments after mine. Please when you answer include the name of the person. It's hard to know if you are responding to me or not. Thanks.
I work full time and therefore cannot usually follow and respond to the early morning comments.
ReplyDeleteOn days when I am off or have a different work schedule I check the subjects of the day and sometimes respond if I have something relevant to say.
The problem is most of the people who contribute to the conversation usually do so before about 12 est and by the time I have an opportunity to read and add to other peoples remarks usually in the evening there are very few additional responses including the JRW whose week it is.
I do read the column every day and enjoy the wide range of topics especially when it draws upon personal experiences. I also look forward to remarks made by people who comment on something I have written. If I have sent something in I will check back several times to see if anyone has responded to my comments.
I am disappointed when I feel it is too late in the day to get any feedback from other readers so I just don’t respond at all.
I don’t do anything with Facebook. I have liked The Back Room, but find that, unlike the beginning, most of the authors now write darker stories than what I want to read or hear about.
I like the idea of knowing more about the Reddies, not only geographically, but also personal traditions in growing up in different areas such as how food is prepared, or even what things are called in different regions of the country or the world.
We'll see who comes back this late to check the comments. I would. I meant to stress that we need to encourage commentors that it is an all-day blog, not just morning. I am always seeing people commenting way before noon saying they are sorry they're running late. I'd like to change the mindset to that the blog has interesting comments all day and night long.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathy
Delete1) How often do you read JRW? Usually every day
ReplyDelete2) When do you read JRW? Usually it’s n the afternoon, then I can read the comments, I do usually comment, but am one of the anonymous
3)What features do you like best on the blog: Guest posts, (just finished The Secret War of Julia Child - very good - thanks to Diana R. Chambers for sharing!). Also the give and take of discussions, cooking, writing and so on.
4) If you are on Facebook, have you joined our Red and Readers Facebook group? Yes!
5) If so, have you enjoyed our Happy Hour LIVE chats? Absolutely enjoy them. And am retired so can usually attend. Thank you for doing the LVIE chats
6) Is there something you'd like to see more of on the blog? It’s a good blend, in my opinion.
7) And lastly, we know there are a lot of readers who never comment. We LOVE hearing from you--should we do more Reader Check-ins? Up to you wunnerful authors.

Shalom Reds and Readers –
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started following the blog, I was not working and had been doing a lot of reading mystery novels (books, ebooks and audiobooks) borrowed from the library. Somehow I stumbled upon Deborah Crombie and I was hooked. I would read the blog in the morning and perhaps comment. Then the pandemic hit, and I went back to work part-time and did not have time to read anything in the mornings. Even only working part-time, I found it hard to make time to read anything much less the blog. I usually stop in 2 or 3 times a week in the afternoon and I rarely comment now. I get a kick out of most everything you guys post. However, I particularly like adding your “what are we reading” books to my TBR list. My problem is time to read them not money to buy them. I often look at Reds and Readers and I love watching the Happy Hour but find Facebook Live posts infuriatingly hard to navigate, so I am often late. I used to answer all the calls to surveys I received but now I am refusing to pay attention to them more and more. Particularly, calls to post feedback on purchases made. If I do make a comment on a Reds post, I usually check back to see if anyone responded to it. I hope JRW will go on for many years to come.
Thank you so much, everyone! We really appreciate you taking the time to respond! And The Management will take all your comments and suggestions under advisement!
ReplyDelete💙
DeleteI read it everyday when I go on Facebook. The time varies depending on my schedule.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes go back to re-read or to read what comments have been added.
I like the what we are writing and what we are reading. I have gotten excellent suggestions to add to my list.
I have joined the Happy Hour whenever possible. I enjoy the questions that the moderator poses to each of you. It’s apparent you enjoy each other’s company and that makes it enjoyable for me too.
I do comment in the happy hour.
I am trying to read all of your books of your books. I have completed all the books to date of two of you and am working on the others. Waiting now for Rhys’ latest coming Tuesday!
I like the balance of things as they are. Thank you for caring about your readers!

5) I can rarely make them.

Alas, yesterday was one of the days I just couldn't make it to the blog. So I'm adding my responses late, in hopes someone will still see them. (And BTW yes, I get really annoyed with all the customer satisfaction surveys out there!)
ReplyDelete1. I try to read it everyday, but lately my schedule is a little out of hand and there are days I miss.
2. 90% of the time in the mornings -- if I don't get there before lunch, the chances of me getting there are slim. I do sometimes check back later, especially if the topic is something generating a lot of interesting responses, but probably less than 50% of the time.
3. My very favorite days are "What are we reading?" followed by guest posts, especially when they introduce new-to-me authors. Many of the Reds personal essays are delightful. There is hardly ever a day I don't enjoy whatever is posted.
4.Yes
5. I have only made one so far, and I did enjoy it. (See out-of-hand schedule comment above!)
