What We're Writing Week: Julia Edits

JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: So I do have some cool news to make up for talking about editing, which is, frankly, kind of dull. I have a publication date for AT MIDNIGHT COMES THE CRY: November 25, 2025.

This tickles me enormously, because the novel starts at almost that date, on the day of the Greenwich Lighted Tractor Parade, which is the Saturday before Thanksgiving. (The year I first say this wonderful event, it was on the 23rd. PS, it's not that Greenwich.) The 25th will be two days before Thanksgiving next year, which means you can all rush out and buy it during Small Business Saturday.

That is, of course, if I finish the edits. I have a combination: some in-depth changes that need a lot of work and some extremely small stuff. Examples of the latter:

9. the tumult was split...tumult? seems a bit fancy

51. bottom of the page. adult full grown should be full grown adult, yes?

106. You're missing the chapter number - 9

141. Absolutely not...who is talking?

And here's an example of the deeper stuff: I've been dealing with my female protagonist's alcohol/ pill addiction for three books now. I was sick to death of it, frankly, but I didn't know how to move on in a realistic way. My brilliant editor said, "It's okay to have her healing and going forward offscreen!" I never would have thought of that on my own. So now, instead of a bunch of scenes about her wanting to pop a painkiller - all of which seemed weirdly inserted into the real story - I have this conversation:

“How are you doing?” St. Laurent’s voice changed, became more, well, pastoral. She recognized it because she used the same tone herself.

“With sobriety, you mean?” Clare sighed. “Not going to lie. It’s hard. I seriously backslid around the time my husband quit his job and the police force was on the chopping block. So much pain and fear and I couldn’t…” she didn’t know how to complete the sentence.

“You want to help everyone, and when you can’t, you don’t know how to deal with it.” St. Laurent tugged on his knit toque. “I’ve been there myself, more than once. What got you out of it?”

“The next morning, the baby was fussy, so I brought him into bed with us.” She smiled at the memory. “I looked at him and my husband, all drowsy together, and I thought, I can have this, or I can have those pain pills hidden in my glove compartment.” She shrugged. “I walked to the car in my PJs and slippers, flushed the pills down the toilet and went to my first AA meeting that night.” She ducked her head. “I get my thirty day chip this Wednesday.”

Such a relief! Dear readers, what do you want to know about editing? And aren't you glad Clare is sober now?

  1. Oh, hallelujah! Cheers for Clare! This is wonderful news . . . and I love how this great little scene puts it all to rest.
    I'm already counting the days until November 25th . . . .

  2. Yay! Such a smart editor and clever you, devising a quick, telling scene to move forward. I can't wait for this book! And starting in November... does that mean WINTER SCENES? I'm doing a little dance. (Selden)

    1. Not just winter scenes, Selden - it's Advent, so there's lots of Christmas everywhere!

  3. Echoing the hallelujah! Of Joan and your sentiment, Julia, of being tired of Clair’s struggle. And while I hope I would be/could be more patient with a friend struggling with an addiction, I was tired of Clair’s. Looking forward to November 2025. Elisabeth

    1. Thanks for the confirmation, Elisabeth. I was tired of writing about it, because I'd explored everything I wanted to. I'm happy to have her settle down into sobriety and get on with her life.

  4. This is great news Julia. It will be perfect timing for buying oneself a holiday gift! I think it is brilliant to treat Clare's continuing addiction challenges with a scene like that. From past snippets and hints, we know there is going to be a lot happening in the book and knowing that Clare is mending will be enough without it being central. This is very exciting news. I can hardly wait to read it.

  5. JULIA: Hooray that you have a publication date for the next book!
And I am glad that you and your editor found a way to move forward with Clare's addiction struggles!!

  6. Yay on the pub date! I can't wait. I'm sure Clare will continue to struggle, but getting her to the 30-day mark (and offscreen) is a biggie.

    1. In my family, we celebrate soberversaries, so maybe I can do that for Clare in the future, Edith!

  7. I'm glad Clare is sober and THRILLED to have that pub date to look forward to! Happy dancing here in Pennsylvania.

  8. Oh I am DELIGHTED you have a pub date, Julia. Yay! But I'm conflicted about Clare's off-page addiction-quitting success. I have found her struggles on the page intensely human -- and not just her struggles with pills and booze, but with motherhood and being a wife and being a priest -- all of it. I will be there for Clare if she can't, after all, tie up the pills problem with sheer determination in her head.

    1. Don;t worry, Amanda, she has plenty of motherhood struggles in this book, as she tries to balance being there for Ethan with her penchant for haring off to solve crimes...

  9. I love this glimpse into your editing process, Julia! I did a little sniff there with that scene of Clare being so honest and vulnerable--you took care of business AND managed to bring a tear to my eyes all in one deft scene. November 25? Sigh. :-)

  11. Whoo hooo a publication date! I'm so glad Clare is sober! I'm delighted when folks celebrate their soberversaries during the prayers for birthdays and anniversaries at church. I imagine editing could be tedious but necessary. I'm rooting for you and Clare.

  12. Congrats for a definite pub date! And it's about time Clare pulled up her tube socks and chose sobriety. Nice foreshadowing from your first book, when Russ described Clare's hair color in terms of whisky highlights.

I'm wading through so many track changes on a podcast short story that I'm running out of ink colors.

    1. Margaret, there are times when I really miss the old way of editing - with different colored pens or pencil on the paper manuscript!

  13. Happy, happy, happy! Wonderful news, Julia! i too am glad that somehow Claire had begun to turn her life around. I really didn't want the story centered around will she or won't she (relapse)? I suppose from time to time it can be sort of referred to as a 'dark time' or whatever you come up with but with need the focus on her strength and not her weakness.

So, in roughly 11 months we can have the book in our hands! Such good news!

  14. A pub date! Fantastic! That is such a mile, stone, and such an accomplishment. Hooray! And there is nothing better than a good idea. Absolutely. Especially when that good idea solves a problem beautifully. Hooray! Cannot wait to read this.

    1. I don't agree with everything my editor says, Hank, but he has the ability to put his finger right on a problem and to get me thinking about how to solve it.

    2. The best editors have a way of asking questions of their writers that lead the writer to the solution on their own. As a journalist, I have had a couple of editors gifted at doing that and have appreciated their efforts tremendously.

  17. Looking forward to the book! because I love the series! but have avoided some parts of some books because I'm a clergywoman in recovery and it's too close. I made the same choice for a character, a few years ago, having the decision to go to AA near the end of one book and living sober (with all it's challenges) in the next!

"51. bottom of the page. adult full grown should be full grown adult, yes?"
Actually I like the sound of "adult full grown" better. Not the standard saying, but more poetic. I like it.

  35. Oh Boy!! Cannot wait for next chapter in Russ and Clare's lives! I have reread all other books many times just to enjoy Russ and Clare. Clare is tough and I'm glad her struggles will be over. Thanks Julia for the fantastic series. Just please don't let anything happen to Russ!!

  36. So happy to hear! Editing sounds tough.

  37. Glad the turning moment, a choice for sober living was made off stage. It seems appropriate that this personal choice will become a way of living, just like Russ made his personal choice for sobriety a long time ago. Glad the pub date is here, and very glad another adventure is waiting for me. Thank you.

  38. I just re-read the entire series so am definitely ready for the next installment! Love your books as do my mom and my sister. We can’t wait to see what happens to everyone including Kevin & Hadley. I think it is so fun that some of my favorite authors are all friends (long-time reader of Rhys and Deborah as well, and just recently started reading Hank and Jenn due to this blog). Will have to check out Lucy & Hallie’s books next. Thank you for all of your hard work! I also enjoy your daughter’s columns!
