HALLIE EPHRON: Once again it's our pleasure to host Edith Maxwell/Maddie Day and celebrate the release of Scone Cold Dead, her thirteenth Country Store Mystery.
Welcome back, Edith! What a great cover!
Seems like only yesterday...
EDITH MAXWELL:
Thank you, Hallie. I’ve made appearances here at Jungle Reds from the start. Hallie also
hosted me back in 2015 for the release of book #1, Flipped for Murder.
In “How the Heck Did we get to Indiana?”, I explained how I arrived at
the perfect setting for my first series written as Maddie Day.
I
was honored to have Hank endorse the book, and I helped launch it at
that year’s Magna Cum Murder conference in Indianapolis, birthplace of
many a Maxwell including my father.
For those readers who haven’t been with me for the whole journey, I thought I might recap the series for you.
- Flipped for Murder #1 October 2015
- Grilled for Murder #2 May 2016
- When the Grits Hit the Fan #3 March 2017
- Biscuits and Slashed Browns #4 January 2018
- Death Over Easy #5 July 2018
- Strangled Eggs and Ham #6 July 2019
- Christmas Cocoa Murder #6.5 Sept 2019
- Nacho Average Murder #7 July 2020
- Candy Slain Murder #8 Oct 2020
- No Grater Crime #9 Sept 2021
- Batter Off Dead #10 March 2022
- Christmas Scarf Murder #10.5 September 2022
- Four Leaf Cleaver #11 January 2023
- Deep Fried Death #12 December 2023
- Scone Cold Dead #13 April 2025
In the first book, Robbie Jordan has finished fixing up the rundown country store she bought in Brown County Indiana, and she’s opening the doors to Pans ’N Pancakes, her breakfast-and-lunch restaurant in the store, for the first time. A couple of days later a murder victim is found with one of Robbie’s cheesy biscuits stuffed in her mouth, and Robbie’s future is suddenly in peril.
Leapfrog to Book #3, When the Grits Hit the Fan, takes place during a snowy winter while Robbie is working on renovations upstairs to make a few bed and breakfast rooms. A man found dead in an ice fishing hole is Robbie’s next case, and later in the book Robbie and her new boyfriend Abe are attacked during an ice storm in a remote cottage in the woods.
For that release, which coincided with the release of one of my Quaker Midwife Mysteries, Julia and Hank did a fun interview with Edith and Maddie, and for my launch party, Maddie and I interviewed each other.
Four Leaf Cleaver features a St. Patrick’s Day competition in Robbie’s store – and murder. When I crowd-sourced a title and Grace Koshida suggested Four Leaf Cleaver, I knew I had a winner. I promptly wrote a cleaver into the story.
Jenn hosted me for the release of Biscuits and Slashed Browns.
Debs hosted me for a joint celebration when No Grater Crime released, along with Alyssa Maxwell and her new book – even though we’re not related! Robbie has the first death from poisoned food in her restaurant and gets to work fast to find out who is trying to sabotage her business. The book ends happily with her marriage to Abe O’Neill.
In Batter Off Dead, the murder of a senior citizen eerily echoes one in the past, and both are linked to police Lieutenant Buck Bird, now a good friend of Robbie’s. Julia was sweet enough to host me but horrified to hear that I write into the headlights without benefit of a plot!
Fast forward: And now #13, Scone Cold Dead. A man’s body is found dead on Aunt Adele’s sheep farm, and it turns out to be someone she knew long ago. But was he murdered? Another mysterious stranger shows up in town. The bank manager has a history with the corpse, as well.
Robbie spies a face looking out from the second floor of an abandoned brick farmhouse. Adele becomes oddly tight-lipped about everything, even when the police want her to talk. In this book, Robbie is weeks away from giving birth. She tries not to put herself and her baby in danger – but she has to clear Adele’s name and get to the bottom of the mystery.
I’m grateful to have shared so many releases here. Thirteen books in ten years is a good long run for a series, and Robbie and Abe now have a newborn. I’ve made the decision to let her go on out top. Yes, I’m ending the Country Store Mysteries. You’re hearing it here first.
My deep apologies to ardent fans of the series (sorry, Jay!), but I’m at the stage of my life when I don’t want to work quite as hard. My publisher wanted to continue the Country Store Mysteries, which made the decision even more difficult.
Still, I have shifting personal priorities (one of whom is named Ida Rose), and they’re important to me. Also, nobody wants a series to go stale for readers or author. I wanted to end it while I still loved creating the stories.
I’ll still be writing the Cozy Capers Book Group series and the Cece
Barton Mysteries, plus short stories and possibly a new project or two,
and I hope you’ll check out my other series if you haven’t already.
Thank you to all my followers who fell in love with Robbie and the South Lick gang. I
often receive messages or comments asking for the next book and saying
they miss their favorite characters. I know I’ll miss Adele and Samuel,
Buck and Corrine, Danna and Turner, Abe and Sean and Freddie, not to
mention Birdy, Maceo, and Cocoa – and Robbie. Who knows, maybe a few of
them will pop up in a short story somewhere.
Readers:
Do you have a favorite book or character in the Country Store series?
Or tell us about a series whose ending made you sad.
BOOK GIVEAWAY! Edith is giving away a signed copy of SCONE COLD DEAD to two luck commenters.
In
Scone Cold Dead, country store and café owner Robbie Jordan is just
weeks away from giving birth, and it seems Robbie and her husband,
dad-to-be Abe, aren’t the only ones grappling with anxiety. A stranger
is causing a stir in town and Robbie’s Aunt Adele appears unusually
preoccupied at the baby shower. But when someone finds a body in the ram
field on Adele’s sheep farm, it’s Robbie’s turn to be worried.
Especially after Chief Buck Bird uncovers a troubling link between Adele
and the possible murder victim. Robbie has no choice but to knit the
clues together and solve this mystery before anything else gets flocked
up . . .
Happy Book Birthday!
ReplyDeleteIt's always sad when a beloved series comes to an end, but thank you for the wonderful adventures we've enjoyed along the way. [It's hard to pick just one favorite, but I do love Robbie . . . .]
Thanks so much, Joan.
DeleteHappy Book Birthday Edith! I'm going to miss this series, but glad it is on your terms. Robbie is my favorite character in the series.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your support throughout the series, Dru.
DeleteTwo votes for Robbie and counting...
DeleteCongratulations on a good long run of this series that is ending on your terms. I am still mourning the end of Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Milhone series with no Z book and also the loss of that great author.
ReplyDeleteAs am I, Brenda. At least I'll still be alive and writing!
DeleteCongratulations on an awesome run of this series! I will seriously miss it, it is one of my all time favorites. Thank you for so many wonderful characters and story lines over the years. I think I might miss Buck the most! lol
ReplyDeleteThank you, Michele - I adore Buck!
DeleteEdith, congratulations on your book birthday! I love this series and am sad to hear that you are ending it now, but glad that this was your choice. You made Robbie such a capable character, strong and determined. At least you can still let fans get a peek at her and her family by writing short stories in the future. I haven't looked yet, but I am sure the ebook has dropped into my Kindle overnight, so I am all set.
ReplyDeleteI truly love the colorful cast of characters you have created in this town! Although Robbie is my favorite character, some of my favorite scenes are when Buck drops by for breakfast or lunch. I can picture him surrounded by plates full of delectable dishes and would like to join him at the table.
Thanks so much, Judy. Don't we all wish we could put away food like he does?
DeleteEDITH: Sending you happy book birthday wishes from Singapore!!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you were able to decide when to end your long-running series.
Looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of SCONE COLD DEAD when I get back to Ottawa after April 11th.
Thank you, Grace! Enjoy the rest of your trip.
DeleteFrom Celia: So happy for you Edith plus big Congrats and HBB. As is said, "All good things must come to an end" and I look forward to a great end from you here. I have enjoyed your sharp descriptions of all the P&P characters but I'll give a shoutout to the mayor. Now she is a character and so well dressed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving us all so much enjoyment with Robbie and P&P.
Aww, thanks, Celia! Yes, it's been great fun to write bigger-than-life Corrine.
DeleteSo excited for the newest release but sad to see everyone in South Lick go! I have greatly enjoyed this series, it was the first cozy series I read and was instantly hooked. Thank you for letting us into Robbie's world for so long!
ReplyDeleteYou are so welcome, Melissa. I'm delighted my books were your cozy gateway!
DeleteEdith I'm so curious where you got that place name: South Lick.
DeleteAha! In the area where I wanted to set the series, there is a South Lick Creek and a South Lick Road, but no town named that. Bingo! A "lick" is a salt deposit, and the region was famous for its mineral (salty) baths in the early 1900s.
DeleteNo!!!!! I will miss this series so much. I have loved getting to know each character. This is the series that got me hooked on cozy mysteries. I do understand what you are saying though and wish only the best for you. Thank you for introducing me to the Cozy World.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, Anon, but I'm glad I got you hooked.
DeleteCongratulations Edith! I hope to get to the series, but I have too many books on my list and this year especially has been a bad one for reading. Robbie and the gang sound wonderful. I think it's great to go out on a high note.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gillian - I understand the too-many-books deal.
DeleteEdith, thank you for all the wonderful books…although I am skeptical of the “stage of life” and not working as hard. Your energy and working will just be redirected. Elisabeth
ReplyDeleteTrue enough!
DeleteKnow when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, as the song goes. 13 books is an awesome run, Edith, and I've enjoyed taking that ride with you!
ReplyDeleteAdele is my very favorite character in this series; you can always count on things turning lively when she's around, and I love her attitude. Turner is my second favorite. He's young, has good ideas, and is devoted to Robbie. You have to love an employee like that, he's a treasure, and I picture him being decorative. Please don't shatter that illusion. LOL
I also made the decision to close down part of my work life when my grandson was a toddler, and to make myself available for any and all opportunities to spend time with him, including traveling to London with them twice. They grow up with the speed of light, and before you know it, they're 20, bleaching their black hair platinum, and towering over you, as Zak is now. Whoosh! I'm so glad for all the fun we were able to have together, and don't regret it for a second. And I know you won't either.
Exactly, Karen. I was home with my sons for about five years, and I don't regret a minute. In the scope of a lifetime, it was a brief but so valuable a moment.
DeleteYes, Adele is a dynamo. My editor offered me a spinoff series featuring her in the same setting, but I just couldn't get behind it. I've proposed a barely historical (mid 1970s) series with her as a young woman supporting character, but he wasn't interested. Could still happen! I also love Turner. Read about his future in the new book, and Danna's!
Edith, my best friend's oldest son is named Turner! And it's another friend's middle name.
DeleteLooking forward to reading this new book. Knowing it's the last must help tie up loose ends, right?
Congratulations on the new book, and the long-running series. It's hard work to keep a series fresh, and you've been doing that with three plus! Our hats' are off to you and we wish you luck in finding the right balance...
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Roberta!
DeleteCongratulations on the new book. I can't wait to read it. I will miss all the characters in the story. I enjoy them all. My favorite after Robbie is the mayor. I love how she dresses and gets involved. Thanks so much for this series. Lois Rotella
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lois.
DeleteCongratulations, Edith. Thirteen books is a good long run and I'm glad you get to end on your terms.
ReplyDeleteIt was hard, for sure, but thank you, Liz.
DeleteSaying goodbye to favorite characters is hard! But, they can live on in my head, just not as colorfully as when written by their author. I still miss your Midwife series - the characters, setting and time period were just perfect. As well as the plots, of course.
ReplyDeleteAah, I miss Rose Carroll too, Judi. Thank you for that.
DeleteEdith, I miss Rose Carroll, though I still have all of the Quaker Midwife books and I am definitely keeping them!
DeleteSounds like a fun series. Thank you Deborah deborahortega229@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThanks, Deborah.
ReplyDeleteApril Fool's Day joke? Or are you publishing Scone Cold Dead for real?
ReplyDeleteNo joke about any of it!
DeleteNo more South Lick stories? Say it isn't so! Seriously, congratulations to you on a great long run with Robbie and the rest of the crew. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Brenda!
DeleteBreaking News: Rupert Murdoch was killed instantly at midnight while traveling in Paris, France with his mistress Rebekah Brooks, who died enroute to the hospital. While hacking into private phone calls, their phones exploded in their faces.
ReplyDeleteApril Fool!
Hahaha.
DeleteHappy Book Birthday!
ReplyDeleteI just realized that I’ve fallen way behind in reading the Country store mysteries. But I’m going to view that as Good News, because I have a few more books to read in that series! My favorite characters are Robbie and Adele.
You deserve to slow down at this stage! Enjoy your granddaughter!
DebRo
Thank you, Deb - enjoy!
DeleteCongratulations on a great run, Edith! I'm happy you get to end it on your own terms, rather than the dreaded chop from your publisher.
ReplyDeleteTrue - that chop is never a fun time. And thanks!
DeleteI love this series so I’m sad to hear it’s ending. Thank you for the great stories.
ReplyDeleteWskwared(at)yahoo(dot)com
Sorry, but I had to do it.
DeleteOkay...how do I say this?
ReplyDeleteI HATED SCONE COLD DEAD!!!!
APRIL FOOLS!
Okay, well I sort of hated the book. Not the story. That was fine and I enjoyed it. I finished my copy last night (thanks Larissa Ackerman from Kensington) and I'll write my review soon. I mean, how could I truly not like a book that gave me not only a good story but surprisingly enough when I first read the dedication page, a shared shout out to me.
But I hated it because...sigh...I knew it was going to be the end. And I'm broke down, busted and bereft at the idea of losing my all-time favorite cozy mystery series. Oh sure, shifting priorities and such, I logically understand the reasons for the series coming to a close.
But in the miniscule part of what is otherwise my cold dead heart, I want Robbie to go on providing butt kicking mystery solving and way better food forever and ever...and evermore.
I mean, not only has this series found a place in that tiny part of the heart but look what it has led to...I get to say I'm friends with a favorite author of mine. In case you didn't know, that photo in the blog post of Edith with that Quasimodo looking guy...that's me. And it is from one of our numerous meetups for a meal and book chat. How cool is it to say you got to break bread with the author whose books fill you with great glee over a cooling corpse? HECK YEAH!
Don't get me wrong, I've loved every book/series that our beloved Edith has written but the Country Store Mysteries is my definite favorite. And I'm sad that we will have to say goodbye to South Lick, Indiana where I would've killed to have breakfast and lunch at Pans N' Pancakes with Edith and alongside the cast of characters I've come to adore so much.
Here's a big Slainte toast to Robbie Jordan, the butt-kicking cozy counterpart to Jack Reacher continuing to serve up heaping helpings of some amazing food...and much like that 20 plus year "farewell" tour that a lot of bands keep doing, a surprise welcome return someday. I can see it now...Baby O'Neill all grown up and solving crimes with the guidance from an older but infinitely wiser Robbie...mom and daughter making the streets of South Lick safe from evildoers everywhere.
Edith, thank you for giving me (okay sure and the rest of the mystery world too if we must include them) the best darn cozy series ever, even if I have to now go cry in my Cheerios that it is all over.
Ooh, Jay - Robbie and an older Gianina solving crimes together, maybe while Adele is still alive? I love it! I've appreciated your hearty support all along, and you were one of the people I knew I'd make unhappy with this decision.
DeleteEdith, standing ovation. This is incredibly wise, and incredibly thought-provoking, and we are honored that you are with us today to discuss it. You are quite astonishing! Congratulations on your wisdom and your presence.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Hank. I'm not sure about the wisdom part. I needed to figure out a way to keep going while honoring my priorities without ruining my life, and this decision was it!
DeleteI know it must have been a hard decision to end the series. Leaving on a high note is a gift and we all thank you for it!
ReplyDeleteAww, you're welcome Pat. I appreciate that.
DeleteEdith, I'm one of many who will be sad you're ending the Country Store series, but I think you're making a wise choice from so many perspectives. As you wrote, it's good for an author to go out on a high note, before getting fatigued with a series. And then, who says writers have to keep going until we drop dead onto our keyboards? Other people retire, go on cruises, spend time with their grandchildren, and get the chance to relax. Knowing how amazingly productive you are, I'm sure dropping one out of three series will open up a lot of free time! Just try to keep yourself from filling it again when the inevitable story idea or three pops into your head... :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julia. That IS the danger, isn't it? Those ideas are already popping up, LOL.
DeleteWhat they said. It is an honor to have you as an online friend. Thank you for offering different 'flavors' (dang my punny self is up) of cozies. The proof was in the pudding, and you rose to the challenge of moving to the world of country life. Good art never dies, but burn-outs happen. Thank you for not 'blackening' this cozy. Salud, my friend and keep on truckin' the goods. We will never be stuffed.
ReplyDeleteYou're good with puns, Coralee! I'll for sure keep on truckin.'
DeleteOh no! While I completely understand, I am extremely sad at the news that there won't be more books in the Country Store Mystery. Will miss seeing what adventures and sticky situations Robbie will be getting into and in her own way working it out to always come out on top.
ReplyDeleteThis news is easier to take knowing there will still be other books - just different characters and series. Love all your books and have ever since I got the Local Food Mystery books way back when. <3
Enjoy life - you have well deserved it - and extra hugs to that precious little one (because they grow so fast and change very often). Hope you will gift us with a new story from time to time. Life is good!

Thank you so much, Kay. Life IS good in my tiny world, and I'm grateful I'm in a situation where my writing provides me with a decent living, even if I cut back a bit.
DeleteI'm looking forward to reading this book, but I'm sad to hear it's the series finale! I've enjoyed the entire series, and I'll surely miss Robbie, Adele, Buck and the rest of the gang. Thanks for giving us this wonderful series.
ReplyDeleteYou are so welcome, Carol.
DeleteEdith, I think many readers will be sad to see the Country Store Mystery series discontinue. You have such a great group of characters in it. But, I certainly understand cutting back to spend more time with your sweet grandchild and other personal time pursuits. It's easy for me to pick my favorite book in this series. It's Strangled Eggs and Ham, the book in which you included my mother's recipe for Southern Jam Cake. Just typing those words makes my mouth water for that caramel icing that makes it so delicious. I do hope to see Robbie pop up in some short stories.
ReplyDeleteI thanked you for that recipe on my post over on the Wicked Authors today, Kathy! A reader mentioned just recently that she'd made the cake. Its fame lives on. ;^)
DeleteCongrats on getting a little more time to enjoy life and Ida Rose! This series is a lovely taste of home for me, so I guess my favorite character is Indiana. ;)
ReplyDeleteAww, thanks, my Hoosier friend! It's a great character.
DeleteCongratulations on the books release, but I am sad to see the series end. I look forward to more books in the other series'. Enjoy yourself.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Sara.
DeleteLove the pics of Jay and Grace with you! Congratulations on your latest, Edith! You're amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenn! I'm not EVEN trying to keep up with you - entirely the reverse, LOL.
DeleteWow, Edith, that's an amazing run for this delightful series, but I get your priorties. Congrats on Scone Cold Dead--and I love your photo with Jay!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debs.
DeleteEdith, you could have whispered your news when I saw you in Denver! Congratulations on Scone Cold Dead (great title!) and on your decision to retire the series. I still have a few books in the series to catch up, not to mention your latest Cece Barton so I have lots of Edith/Maddie to enjoy. (I thought that picture of you and Grace looked familiar. It’s on my phone from which I took it!!) Hi to Ida Rose! — Pat S
ReplyDeleteThank you, Pat - my apologies for not giving you the photo credit!
DeleteI gave you the picture. I just wanted our JRW community to know we all hung out together in Denver!
DeleteHappy Book Day! What an accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteCarpe diem! Priorities matter 🌹
Thanks. Carpe Diem, indeed.
DeleteWhen Hank ended the Charlotte McNally series, I was sad. Then, a couple of years later, she introduced us to Jane Ryland. Yet, their were only 4 books in each series. Boo! Who! Who! Now I am waiting for her to write a sequel to One Wrong Word. I suggested this to her at her book launch at the Unlikely Story bookstore. There is certainly more to this story and I NEED IT! Thanks for the opportunity to share, Edith. I will certainly check out your books!
ReplyDeleteI felt the same about both those series from Hank!
DeleteI guess all good things must come to an end, but it always makes me feel a little sad to see a good series come to an end. An example would be Ellen Byron's Cajun country mystery series. I really enjoy Robbie and Buck is hilarious with his notorious appetite. cherierj(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI understand the sadness, Cherie - I feel it, too.
DeleteI’m always sad when a cozy mystery series that I like ends!! I enjoy your books!! Lindaherold999@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda.
DeleteEdith/Maddie, congratulations on Scone cold Dead !
ReplyDeleteI’m very happy to have a new country Store book to read and I just downloaded it to my Kindle.
I’m a little sad that it will be the last one but I understand you completely. We all have to make choices and , at least, you have other series. I wish the best.
Merci, Danielle. J'espere que t'aime ma histoire nouvelle (sorry for the possibly fractured French...)!
DeleteCongratulations on the 13th and last book in the series, Edith. I'm sure you'll never regret making more time in your life for your new grandchild! I've been sad about the end of lots of series over the years, often made sadder by the death of the author. One example was the end of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott books.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kim.
DeleteCongratulations on your new release. Thirteen books in a series is quite an accomplishment. I will miss Robbie and the South Lick series. Enjoy your time with Ida Rose.
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
Thank you, Dianne. I plan to enjoy her to the fullest!
DeleteHappy book birthday, Edith!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Diana.
DeleteI had the great pleasure of reading the ARC of Scone Cold Dead a few weeks ago (the 1st book in the series I've read), and I loved it! While I'm sorry the series has ended, I'm excited to go back and, starting with #1, read the rest of the series (I already have a few on my Kindle, along with some of your other books). The characters are so great, and I'm looking forward to spending more time with them.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Laurie! I'm so happy you want to read more.
DeleteAll good things must come to an end! That's what I'm telling myself to see my favorite series end. I have decided I need to go back to book one and start over to prolong my ending. I am also very greatful Cozy Capers will continue. However I don't think I'll ever forget the drop of a rollercoaster feeling I had when I just read "that's right you heard it here first". Thank you for a great series and happy book 📖 birthday 🎂
ReplyDeleteI hate to give people that feeling, Amanda - but I had to. I hope you love the re-read and my other stories.
DeleteCongratulations on 13 books! I remember when the first came out. Hard to believe it’s been 10 years already. I’m sure you feel that more than anyone. I need to catch up! I’m glad you’re prioritizing your “actual” life. Those moments and memories are the ones that matter the most.
ReplyDeleteAbigailfbn(at)yahoo(dot)com
Thank you, Abigail!
DeleteIs it OK if I don't have a favorite character, but I want one of those adult tricycles from the Cozy Capers series?
ReplyDelete
